It amazing what the family historian can find at the archives. You leave your bag/coat in a locker (£1 coin refundable needed). You also need a pencil because pen and ink is not allowed. There is plenty to keep you occupied without going into the secure part of the archives, (you need to take proof of identity and have a... More

I was visiting with a friend as she was trying to find a part of her family who we couldn't research from Australia. John who works there went beyond the call of duty to help her find her family. It took a couple of hours, but now she knows more about her family. Thank you so much as her Dad... More

We had a lot of help from friendly staff but we had not brought enough information to go ahead. Best to phone in advance and take required identification. Lots of interesting books to browse for ages !

Check the opening times before you go as it isn't open everyday to the public, but if you have specific enquiries about historic Shropshire the folks here are ready and willing to help

Our party of seven happened upon the Abbey on our walk from hotel into town. It was on our pre-planned of things to do and see but we were totally underprepared for the greeting we received. There is a real presence in this place, a real sense of being surrounded by a cloud of saints, a tranquillity that is so... More

The staff need to be praised first, because without them most of us would wander aimlessly for the full visit to the Archives. They have been helping me in my never ending search for family for a long time. Whether in person or by email, they always deliver. And if the search is probably going to be hopeless, they usually... For those of us into amateur genealogy of Shropshire this is a little gem. Really helpful staff who are run off their feet because of staff cuts. Even has a nice little side room for drinks and locker storage.
