I have been visiting the Botanical Gardens for a number of years and have always enjoyed my visit. After leaving the busy Ecclesall Road behind you enter an oasis of calm. The gardens are kept beautifully and there is always something to admire whatever time of year you visit. The conservatories which were refurbished a few years ago have lots... More

Many visits over the years in all seasons. Always a beautiful place, always something new as well old including fossilised trees, the historic bear pit and Victorian hothouses which used to be an aquarium and aviary but you can't have it all. Top tip: take some monkey nuts to feed the squirrels, they are very tame. There are lots of... More

The gardens are well worth a visit at any time of the year, changing apearance as the seasons change, but always interesting. This a great place for adults and children alike, and all within walking distance from a good public transport system and the city centre.

Pleasant at any time of year, these free gardens have _ at the southern end _ the many eateries of Ecclesall Road plus the fine shops of Sharrow Vale Road. Near the north end are fine eateries in Broomhill. It's also offers a breathing space for visitors to the Hallamshire/ Jessop/ Weston Park/ Children's hospitals. Note - not free on... More

Actually not too small. About 200m long and 100m wide and covers 19 acres. Huge variety of planting makes this a delight for plantspeople. The National Collections of Weigela, Diervilla and Sarcococca are sited here. The Gardens contain several listed buildings including the restored Grade II* listed curvilinear Glass Pavilions, some of the earliest ever built. Plenty of benches when... More

I first became familiar with the gardens almost 45 years ago, as a student in Sheffield and I have never tired of visiting when I am in the area. The plants are always stunning, sometimes surprising, and there is always a quiet, scenic corner, in which to sit and read. It is a photographer's dream - indeed, I have several... More
