Having recently visited Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and Kelham Island relatively recently, as well as Bishop's House - another of Sheffield's lesser known museums - I decided to visit the Shepherd Wheel before the summer came to end. Taking the Stagecoach 83A bus from Snig Hill in central Sheffield, for the most direct route you are best advised to get off... More

I've know about the Shepherd's Wheel ever since I was a kid. I even saw it being restored but I haven't been back for years. My partner and I had decided to go for a walk along the river from Endcliffe Park right up to Forge Dam. It was with great delight that the old mill was open and we... More

I was excited when the Shepherd's Wheel reopened after seemingly years of restoration. Instead, it's just ok, and I wouldn't say it's worth a visit in itself. The access times themselves aren't great, and so it's often closed when I pass by on a walk. It's great that people are so dedicated to preserving Sheffield's industrial history, and there are... Shepherd wheel was recently restored by the fundraising efforts of local people, the city council and Heritage Lottery funding. It's a 17th century cutlery grinding workshop, open at weekends and bank holidays when the water wheel and grinding wheels are running. Volunteers and museum staff are there to explain how everything works and it's a fascinating relic of Sheffield's industrial... More

Carefully conserved and a fascinating insight into local history. Take a walk up side of the Dam and over the road and follow the path up the valley to Wire Mill Dam and onwards to Forge dam for refreshments!

A water powered mill which ground knives, sharp edge tools etc. Newly refurbished and is now opened by "Friends of Porter Valley." It shows the horrible conditions that our forefathers used to indure. They still produced some excellent work. Set in now what is a lovely country park, very good staff.
