Cycled Reading to Bristol in June 2012 with a group of friends..good surface despite the wet weather of summer 2012, even where we chose to follow the towpath and ignore the Route 4 signs that take you away from the canal and round the lanes. A great trip..stayed overnight in Devizes and enjoyed Wetherspoons breakfast in the morning. Advice...when leaving... More

Brilliant! Leaving do for on the day barge from Sally Boats. Cooked full english breakfast baps to keep us going as we journeyed up to the Barge Inn at Seend for lunch (great food). Followed this on the journey back with Cream Tea. Surprisingly excellent weather and great day out for a group of 10.

The scenic beauty of the canal, has to be experienced. Many Pubs are on river-bank of Kennet canal, plenty of barges with curious paintings on side to view.

... probably best walking it east to west... better to be leaving reading behind and walking towards bath and bristol! infrastructure good; pubs at frequent intervals on the towpath (of course); occasional industrial archaeology or ancient monument delights.

The Kennet and Avon Canal is full of surprises. Wherever you are along this long waterway, there is something to see. Note, for example, the small bunkers or Pillbox structures from the Second World War. And have a chat with the canalboat owners slowly passing by. At Aldermasten there is a nice little information centre and café well worth visiting.
