We hired a narrowboat in Aldermaston and travelled to Hungerford and back in five days.Great boat from ABC boathire, clean and well equipped. The mainline railway runs close to the canal all the way so there is some noise and there are some quite industrial, scruffy areas. Overall though the canal is beautiful, quite challenging at times with some strong... More

Through reading town centre is fine 7/10. Through the industrial area 5/10. Past the terraced houses 8/10. Lovely river to the cunning man 8/10. The cunning man itself 2/10 don't bother. A hard going canal expect to do 10 - 14 locks a day for 6 - 8 hours travel we average 1.6 mph. Locks are of a poor construction... More

This canal by the Avoncliff and Dundas aqueducts is very picturesque. Plenty of boats going by and lots of walks in the valley and on the towpath. Not much parking by the Avoncliffe Aqueduct but a good carpark by the Dundas aqueduct which is busy and has a nice cafe by private moorings on the coal canal through a swing... More

We walked along the towpath from Bath to just beyond Bathampton. The canal itself was pretty but the amount of rubbish left by people using the canal and towpath detracted from our enjoyment., particularly in one place where it looked if the rubbish from the barge had just been tipped on to the path. Some of the barges were also... More

Lovely walk at the side of the canal. Cycling is allowed on the path and the majority of cyclists ride past at high speed without any thought for the safety of young children or dogs getting out of their way quick enough.

We sail this canal regularly and love every inch of it, the towpaths are good for walkers but I would echo another contributor and say watch out for bike riders who are usually friendly and ring their bells if you haven't noticed them. The wildlife is varied and excellent for birdwatchers in particular. Sailing through Reading Oracle Centre is fun... More

This review is for the Kennet and Avon canal trust tea room and visitor centre. We were in Reading for a wedding and as the canal was a short distance from our hotel decided to stop for breakfast before heading home. It was a lovely morning so we walked along the canal and then went to the tea room for... More

Dress appropriately for the weather and you can enjoy a walk in the countryside on level ground all year round. There is plenty of wildlife to enjoy just be wary of the cyclists who can approach a little quietly sometimes.
