Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed character guides, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

You may wish to see the old Norman keep's mound, still in tact, or where Queen Matilde escaped across the ice after scaling down St. Georges Tower, or perhaps you would rather see what the conditions were like for more modern occupants of the Oxford Prison some of whom are depicted in large photographed form on a staircase. Whatever your... More

We came upon this unexpectedly, thought about it and were please we went in. It is a tour by one of four characters related to the Castle and prison, dressed in clothes of the day. We were tanken by the "Prison Govenor". It was very informative and well thought out. The walk up the tower will not be for everybody,... More

Had a wonderful tour guide! He kept it entertaining for all ages. I did think it was going to involve more rooms than it did. You pretty much go up to a room in the tower and on the tower and then the museum is on your own. I liked the history and felt it wasn't too cheesy. Only do... More

Visited here three times over the last few years and I have always been impressed. It isn't far from the train station (about a 5 minute walk) and is in Oxford city centre. The tour guides are always informative and entertaining, the castle is kept tidy and overall I feel it is good value for money. A good choice for... More

Born & live in Oxford, thought it was about time we did some touristy things, it's all on our doorstep, so we chose the castle this time. Booked on line this morning and got there for the 2pm tour. Our tour guide Mr Ketch was fantastic at interpreting everything that had gone on at the castle since it was built,... More

Excellent tour. We were guided by Robert D'Oyly who was looking well considering he is 950 years old! You may get another character - there are several. The tour takes you up the castle tower, but be aware, to see this tower you need to climb 101 spiral steps. It was informative and entertaining and he view from the top... More

Physical representations of locked room mysteries are starting to emerge as a phenomenon in their own right but this is a touch above the rest. The setting is second to none, at the top of a winding staircase in an old prison tower and the puzzles are testing but logical. A great way to spend an hour!

Guided tour makes the most of this historic place. We bought a combined ticket which gave us access to the castle, hop on/hop off tour buses and a trip on a river boat. The castle has a lot of history, much of which as the local jail. he tour guide was excellent at giving a running commentary and the view... More
