Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed character guides, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

Blast from the past

One of the best way to learn the history of the old prison. You can only enter with a guided tour, but you won't regret, worth it.

Fun if you're in town for more than a few days. Fun guides who succeed in setting a creepy atmosphere.

1000 years of history...... 45 minute guided tour (half of which is just standing around with no information) then 20 minutes to cover the entire museum. I probably read every info board and was in much longer than everyone else. They haven't even bothered to recreate the cells as they were when in use. Save your money and go for... More

Really enjoyed this and it was well-led by the costumed guide. You have to book on a tour and these can fill up as the day goes on.

Got my ticket from the hop on- hop off bus company, bargain for two days bus trip and visit to the castle £20, we had a really nice young lad doing our tour, he was the castles executioner, told us lots of facts about the castle and prison, also some "jokes"!!. Would recommend a visit to this attraction

I was very impressed our Guide was a knowledgeable lady called Gypsy, she made the stories come alive, I was a bit concerned about the 101 steps but they weren't a problem there was a handrail all the way up, and you had a break half way, it was a lot better than I expected, after the tour you were... Paid a senior ticket price of £8.75 for my timed tour. Had a period costumed male guide who was interesting. Lots of steep steps in a spiral shape to climb up the tower but a great view from the top. Found the underground crypt a bit spooky and kept in the middle of our party! You could go back after... More

I visited here with a friend on 12-3-15 (15.40 tour) and our costumed guide "Black Bessie". She really brought her character alive and threw herself into her spiel. Full of energy and didn't flinch even when my friend flashed her camera while she was in full flow! (Well, she did but she then found a way to incorporate it into... More

Loved the remains of the castle and the tour. A bit pricey for a 20 min tour, but if you like history especially civil war stuff or prison architecture, you won't resent it. A lot of narrow steps, probably steeper than the tower of London so be prepared for this. The underground haunted crypt was a wow moment. The ancient... More
