Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed character guides, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

This well-managed attraction is situated west of Oxford's centre. The castle itself was begun in 1071 as one of many on land granted by the Norman King William I to his associates to keep order and control over the Saxons. It is believed that St. George's Tower is pre-conquest. It is thought to be at the site of the West... More

Me and my colleague decided to go to Oxford Castle Unlocked as one of our lecturers recommended the attraction. As the attraction goes we gained a great understanding of the castle and it's importance during sieges as well as being a prison. Moreover you gain a beautiful view of Oxford and the Magdalen and Christ's Church Colleges from the top... More

We only went to this venue because we were given tickets as a gift. Oxford Castle has spent most of its history as a prison, and we have no interest in the subject. Then there's the issue of actually getting there. Oxford Council hates cars, so there will be an element of public transport. Luckily, the nearest Park & Ride,... More

Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. Whilst a number of the stories you will hear on the tour at Oxford Castle Unlocked can be grim, it reflects the reality of the prisoners’ lives during those periods. There are also a number of lightly humoured tales including the story of a prisoner who managed to escape twice... More

Great for adults and children very informative. Tower climb is a bit tricky but worth it when you get to the top.

This was the main attraction for myself for visiting oxford. The tour guide played the gypsy character well & her encyclopedic knowledge made the whole experience a delight journey from start to finish . I thoroughly enjoyed story after story about the changes in prison life in oxford castle & the tale of matilda the Princess. The climb up to... More

Being new to Oxford, we wanted to go to an attraction that would give us some history of the town. We noticed this attraction on TripAdvisor and decided to give it a try. Oxford Castle has been around since Norman times, and our guide (in the person of a Victorian-era prison warden) gave us a brief, but highly informative trip... More

Thank you for your fantastic feedback. We aim to deliver the story of Oxford from the castle’s beginnings in 1071, right through to when the prison closed in 1996. The buildings would have been standing through some of the most important eras of British history and we endeavour to share these with our guests, always applying it back to how... More

Today I went to take the tour at Oxfod Castle Unlocked and it was such a pleasant surprise. The place is full of history and the guide is really good in telling the stories, so the horror of the prison life is clear to everybody. The setting is very authentic and the place is really old, so well worth the... More

A great visit to a castle that was still a prison up to the 1980's. Certainly a formidable place. Very friendly staff and an informative guided tour. I was told that a wing of the prison has been turned into a hotel! Each room is given the space of three cells. Must visit there on another occasion
