Thoroughly enjoyable visit with very good historical character guides and great views from atop the tower. Additional interesting history of the more recent use as a prison and visiting some remaining 'wings'. Also other activities going on ariound the castle and plenty of seating to relax, have a break and/or people watch.

Down side is that there are loads of steep steps to climb, so not for the infirm. But once you get up to the top of the castle the views are spectacular. Very engaging guide in costume character of Robert Thacker.

I came here to see the outdoor cinema shows and it was an amazing setting. The staff were friendly, the prices were reasonable and the historic backdrop was fantastic.

We visited here last week with our 11yr old grandaughter. Did not know what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised with our visit. By the previous reviews on the guides, we were lucky to get a guide acting as a prison inmate, complete with prison uniform. I cannot remember his name, but he was very very good. We spent... More

An excellent guided tour, with great guide in costume, each one different character through the ages, each telling his/her own story.

If you are after knights and princes, this isn't really it as it has spend much of it's life as a prison however that in it's self is interesting ands there is a fair bit of medieval history too, just that it looks less the part for it being a prison. Still good though, worth the money and the ghost... More

We had pre-booked a tour before we arrived to save a bit of money. We were shown around by "Robert Thacker" a highwayman played brilliantly by Tiris (apologies if spelt his name wrong!) The tour lasts about an hour and is basically stories about the previous prisoners and a walk up the tower. (Spiral staircase and 101 steps - not... More

In Oxford for 2 nights, we wanted to do something touristy/historical that wasn't too long or serious and this fitted the bill perfectly. It's a tour of what is left of the castle and crypt that was then used as a prison (unbelievably when you see the cells, a working prison until as recently as 1997). Our tour guide was... More

I was really looking forward to going to see Oxford Castle, as I had been visiting Oxford in the past several times. But what a disappointment. It is overpriced first of all. And second of all, it's not a castle. It's a tiny tower. The lady who was our tour guide was horrible, and I felt myself cringing several times... More

Such a disappointment that you didn't enjoy yourself when visiting last week. Looking through your review I can see that a number of factors played a part in your experience being less than what you expected. Sadly I'm unable to help with the lack of Castle facade as much of it has been destroyed over the years. However there still... More

Although we didn't have much time there, it was a very good tour. Our guide gave us a brilliant insight into the Castle and it's history. Sadly we had to rush through the exhibitions but they seemed extensive. The horror that the prisoners went through was truly shocking. We'll be back the next time we go to Oxford/
