Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed character guides, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

A good place to take the children on a wet day. Can be scary so probably 10 years and upwards. Interesting to.learn about prison life through the ages right until.the prison closed. Wear comfortable shoes as tricky steps to navigate. If a winter visit wrap up as can be cold.

The tour guides are very knowledgeable and kept it interesting by donning characters from their stories. You could ask questions about almost anything and they would have the answer. Our guide was a very engaging story teller. The history the place holds is incredible. I learnt so much and would definitely go again and again!

We went as 2 couple to the murder mystery event at Oxford castle. Now, I won't spoil the surprise of who the killer was but I can wholeheartedly say that we had a great night. 2 hours of entertainment, 2 glasses of wine and a photo were all included for the reasonable price of £25. All of the actors were... More

The Castle is essentially a prison. And when you hear the stories of how the prisoners were kept, it'll stay with you for a long time. So do enjoy the visit. Don't miss.

I would like to say a big thank to all involved at Oxford Castle Unlocked for the fantastic tour we had today. The tour guide we had was very good and obviously knew his stuff, he made it a very enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend that anyone visiting Oxford add the tour to their ‘must see’ list. We were shown round by King Stephen and it was a most informative and very entertaining tour, lasting about an hour. Excellent value and good fun.

Visited oxford as a trip away from London for my partners birthday. Decided to do the castle as I'm a real lover of horrible histories and the "roleplay" was brilliant for the actor who played Isaac Darkie - never once did he break character and he was informative and the tour flowed very nicely. Definitely worth a visit!

Oxford Castle is ideal for either the general tourist or ones with a bit more historical knowledge. The tours are lead by 'Characters' from various periods (mine was from the Georgian prison) and are knowledgable about all periods. The exhibits are beautifully balanced between family and academic. Well done, I enjoyed it immensly

If you are interested in a bit of history in Oxford, especially the lives of the prisoners during the 18th century, then this is the spot for you. Originally constructed as a castle during the 11th century, it became an administrative center and prison during the 14th century. The guide AHEM prison warden was really knowledgeable. You'll see the places... More
