A good idea with guides that bring it to life. More suitable for older children & adults. Lovely places to eat in the courtyard.
Our tour guide was very informative, was dressed authentically and was very comical. I found it interesting to see the old punishment/torture aids and to read about the way in which the prison regime operated in the past. It was a very enlightening experience.
We visited Oxford Castle unlocked on Wednesday 16th April, and had a fantastic experience. Our tour guide (Prisoner D100) was funny, informative and really brought the history of the castles past to life. He told vivid stories which kept us interested, and the views rom the Saxon tower are like no other in the city. The whole day was excellent.... More
One of the best castle tours I've been on. Our tour guide was amazing; she was very entertaining, informative and kept us laughing. The castle alone is impressive, but the added stories and information really helped bring it to life. The museum exhibit was filled with loads of interesting displays and artifacts. Definitely a must if you're in Oxford!
Fantastic place. Really nice staff and great tour. Go up the tour on a nice and day and check out the beautiful view of one of Englands best cities! A serious must do. Also the cafe is really nice and lots of choice.
Saved 15% by booking online in advance. Parking close by. Visited 14 April as part of a family day out and glad we went. The surviving Tower of the 1,000 year old Castle looked imposing and did not disappoint. We all enjoyed it - the tour was excellent, conducted by our costumed Highwayman host Issac Darken who brought History to... More
Took the tour. Enjoyed the history however did not like like the format. The manner of the guide, hopefully an act, I found to be patronising. Another of the guides did pass the time of day and seemed much more personable.
The castle housed prisoners until 1996. The conditions were appalling and it was a reminder of how often innocent people must have suffered over the years especially during the Civil War. I had just read "A Cruel Fate" by Lindsay Davis who wrote about the experiences of prisoners then - it is well worth a read
There is actually an official tour for the castle. But since we were in a budget because we are student, so we decided to just take picture outside of the castle and also its back garden. The garden is very beautiful. There is also a small hill in front of the castle, but when we were there the gate to... More
Don't get me wrong here, I did enjoy my visit to the castle, but as other reviews have mentioned at times it is more a prison tour than a traditional castle tour....but then that's its history and what it has been used as so you can't change that. Our tour guide was really good, and played his role well in... More
