Owner description: A magnificent 17th century ducal mansion built on the site of the original Medieval Castle. The Castle has a turbulent past, linked to kings and conquerors and still has a maze of original caves hidden beneath its imposing walls. Now the building houses a Museum & Art Gallery, offering visitors an opportunity to see the best regional, national and international art in the regularly changing exhibition galleries. The viewpoints of the city were very impressive but the castle didn't have much to offer except a walls walk and a few paintings hardly worth the entry fee to go in.

The beautiful castle, which is more a palace, is located within walking distance from the Broad Marsh bus station. The guided tour to the caves underneath the castle is definitely worth a visit. However, it is not a strenuous tour, and is basically down hill. The castle is a great picture stop, but cannot entertain you for more than 2-3... More

I was utterly disappointed with this attraction; walking around the castle ruins takes no longer than 20 minutes. The view of the gardens are vey good. Once inside the rebuilt castle keep there is little information about the castle and its history.

The Castle has a lovely small park, wonderful views over the city and on a good day one can see about 12 miles, a good cafe with fresh cakes, temporary exhibitions, education programmes, and loads of permanent exhibitions and paintings, special events. Negatives; I won't pay the enteance fee (I used to go about 8 times a year when it... More

There are some lovely little bars dotted around including the Oldest Inn in England.....Lovely food as well. Castles ok for young kids as there are nice parks and little boys love the toy wooden swords.

Was looking forward to the castle but unfortunately was slightly disappointed, the castle itself can be seen and walked around in ten minutes! Great views from the top though! Inside the castle was interesting they had everything from lace to an exhibition on art although I am not too sure what relevance everything had to the city! Just one tip... More

This used to be the site of a medieval castle, that I'm sure was very impressive back in the days, however all that remains is the gate house and some tunnels in the rock. The building that is now on the site houses a modern take on a 'museum' that is completely geared towards children. Overall the museum is very... More

Not what I expected, not a Castle but more of a Hall. Really enjoyed the military collection through the years and the Robin Hood story but the art collection is not my thing. Great views across the city and a pleasent way to spend an hour or so and you have to go and have a picture with the Robin... More

I loved watching the whole city on the castle as it was breathtaking and incredible. The trip there with my friends also fun as we took a lot of self portraits by a professional photographer, JJ Yong.

Castle exhibits and art gallery very interesting and well worth a visit with excellent café. The Cave Tour was very misleading as it was just a walk down a passage with a very poor guide. There is a video in the Castle showing the caves, but do not expect the tour to bear the slightest relationship to the video. It... More
