78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton.

Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions.

78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

A little gem in Northampton, the house is glorious and original, you stand in any room and imagine living there, the quality of the restoration and preservation is exceptional, a very clever merging of old and new, with the house and gallery flowing into each other

Our drama group has been coming here for it's annual christmas meal for several years. There is always a good menu and everyone enjoys the food. Only minus point is that the dining room is very echoey if there are a lot of people in the room and you sometimes have a job to here each other- perhaps something could... More

This is a beautifully preserved house with so much of Rennie Mackintosh on display as he designed it in the 1920's for Mr Bassett Lowke the model maker of boats and trains. It is well worth a visit and a conducted tour. After the tour I recommend this is followed up with tea and cakes in the attached restaurant which... More

Friendly, stylish location. Served a great selection of sandwiches and cakes for high tea with good vegetarian choices. Good value.

My sister law insisted we all traipse round No78 the last time she was up from Brighton. I like Mackintosh from a architectural perspective so rather than say, we'll meet in the pub in an hour, we went along. My wife and I found it pretty dull and boring to say the least. Had we not sat in the talks... More

This is somewhat atypical Mackintosh design as it is Art Deco style. Worth visiting to see the re-creation of his work. It is, however a small house and he was only responsible for the design of part of it and, in fact, never visited the site. The rest of the house is much less interesting in design which results in... More

What an excellent afternoon tea. Very pleasant surroundings and friendly staff. The food was delicious and plenty of it. We had to take some cake home.

Rennie MacKintosh heaven. A gem of a place worth an attempt to see even if you have no other reason to visit Northampton.

If one is into Rene Mackintosh and Art Deco, this is the place to see, mackintosh didn't design many houses in England...this is one of them though. It's English Heritage, so if you are not a member, there is a fee to get in.
