My husband and I called in for lunch recently. On entering the wonderful old inn we found laminated sheets everywhere telling you to wait to be seated, this took about five minutes! While waiting to be seated we looked in all the rooms, great. After finally being seated we ordered lunch from the excellent well priced menu and were not... More

Well if you like pubs and old buildings, you can't get better then the black swan. One of the most haunted pubs in york, just outside city centre but very easy to reach. If you visit, be sure to ask to have a look up stairs at the uneven floors. Great pub with good beer and food

We were recommended this pub by a local. We are pleased we made the effort to find it. It was lovely to walk into a cosy back room with a real log fire. While enjoying a hot toddy we decided to have a meal. Great move as we thoroughly enjoyed it, terrific value.

For anyone looking for a modern pub, don't check in here!! Great if you're planning to do some sight seeing, but certainly wasn't for me and my partner, we felt like we'd stepped in to a shoot for pirates of the caribbean!

This is a pub with real character, particularly the back room with its large fireplace, low beams and olde-worlde feel. The front rooms with their panelled walls are also unusual and atmospheric. Originally an old private house it has however been a pub for centuries! Handy for the two ends of the city walls in the Foss Islands area and... More

We didn't stay here, although plan to the next time we visit York, however, we did visit to check out the food and we were certainly not disappointed. The plates were huge and the food plentiful and delicious. The menu was varied and reasonably priced. The pub itself is steeped in history being over 500 years old and we certainly... More

A very old and atmospheric pub which is just a little off the main tourist centre. Freindly staff and some good beers. The food is very good but served in huge portions that can be off putting. The chips in particualr are nice but come in massive dinner plate proportions! Smaller sized meals would make me eat in here more... More

We took some friends from Halifax as it was Jubilee weekend and the main city centre pubs were very busy, so we thought going out onto stone bow it might be bit quieter. The pub has always been a favourite of mine for drinks and old atmosphere so we went in and were told about 20 minutes wait which was... More
