Very rude staff who couldn't of been more unwelcoming if they tried. We actually heard them speaking about us around the corner because we were unsure of the menu. They definitely need to work on their customer service skills and the food was average too.

We wanted to eat in an atmospheric old pub that also served reasonable food. Our lovely host, Dave, at Sleepers B & B (see my review) recommended The Black Swan as being able to provide a good feed in a lovely setting. We weren't disappointed with the building - Tudor-style and apparently dating back to the 15th century. Disappointed, though,... More

Great pub for food and real ale. Lots of space, with a number of rooms. Often have live music on during an evening. Large beer garden behind in the car park.

We were looking for a traditional pub meal on the second night of our short break in York and the Black Swan was recommended to us. This is a good honest pub with helpful staff and good pub food. My husband had fish and chips which came with mushy peas and bread and butter and I had home made quiche,... More

Went for a quick one hour walk around the bar walls. Had parked in sainsburys £1.10 an hour, paid for two hours. As we still had an hour left we decided to nip in to the black swan for a quick pint of lime and water to refresh us. The Food smelt lovely. So we decided to have a small... More

My son had his 40th birthday celebrations here in the room upstairs. The food provided on the buffet was first class and plentiful. The staff were helpful and let us put decorations in the room as long as we didn't use drawing pins - understandable!! It was the first time I had visited this pub and thought it was very... More

Great staff who cannot do enough for you. Good sized portion of home cooked food that tasted good. Also has an interesting history of ghosts that had my daughter intrigued.

Having booked and paid for catering for 60 people well in advance we were assured that everything would go so smoothly however when it came to the big night the amount provided was wholly inadequate. Upon bringing this matter to the attention of the bar staff the response was along the lines of "take it or leave it", the attitude... More

Excellent service in a great english pub. A must visit if you are in the area. The fire was going , the cat was happy on the chair, food was good and the prices are very reasonable. The hosts worked hard to make everyone happy
