We came to the Swan to have drinks in one of York's oldest (and reportedly most haunted) pubs. We ended up staying for a performance of bluegrass music from musicians from York and Nashville. Totally unexpected but lots of fun with an enthusiastic audience.

Yet again, for the third year running we booked the upstairs room for our annual gathering. The food was lovely as always and the portions are huge. I had the pigeon pie. Mouth watering. Some of our group were so full they could not finish their meals. Really nice pint of guinness in this pub. The staff are very friendly... More

If your wife is keen to visit the quilting museum in York (and you're not), fear not. Park yourself in the very pleasant Black Swan opposite and drink the very well kept Timothy Taylor's Landlord until she's quilted out. There were some German's there when I visited but I'm sure our American cousins would really love it too. It's a... More

A variety of dishes, great simple rustic food and big portions! Average price is £8.95 and the pies are fantastic. Great open fires and a warm and friendly welcome.

I came here on my first night in York for a pint and ended up going back a couple of days later for lunch. The staff is very friendly, especially the gentleman behind the bar on both occasions. The food was great and the atmosphere is just what I was looking for. Nice, cozy pub. :) Free wifi was a... More

It's an impressive building of separate rooms, good furnishings and fires. Staff were friendly and efficient and we enjoyed both food and drink (though there were plenty of menu items not available). We intended to stay for one but ended up there for most of the evening.

Went here on advice of a friend, and am so glad I took the time to find it! Great pub, with good choice of beers, and drinks. Food looked good, but, we were not really hungry. When people imagine what an English pub is like, this is what comes to mind. Quaint, local. Friendly

Discovered this great eatery when we took our daughter to uni today. Great food, well cooked and hot. Portions massive and not over priced. Staff all very friendly, Unfortunately I was driving so not able to try out the fine beers on offer - but I will be back to give it another go. Well done all at the Black... More

I've been to the Black Swan just twice - both times for the York folk weekend. The bar staff are friendly, even when the bar is really busy. The beer is tasty, with real ales such as Copper Dragon and Theakstons being available. There's an outside seating/smoking area. The inside of the pub has been maintained in a traditional decor,...
