The refurbished art gallery is well worth the entrance fee or membership fee, which is a bargain if you're a local resident. A good mix of art, great local stuff and a mix of traditional and contemporary. Was delighted by the young chattery visitors enjoying themselves.... more irritating were the parents accompanying them who were either squawking at them or... More

Bright, airy and interesting. The refurbished gallery is beautiful with a mixture of modern and traditional art. The stunning wall piece The Halo is mesmerising. There is a good shop with some quality art materials on sale. Staff were polite and professional and only too willing to help and answer questions. When the gardens and cafe are fully functional this... More

Spent an informative morning in the art gallery. The building has undergone a dramatic transformation, is light, airy and pleasant to walk around. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The paintings are well displayed although more attention to labelling and more information about the exhibits would be appreciated. There are some excellent pieces of art on display and many... I hadn't visited before the renovation so can not do a before and after. However thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours here. A good mix of artists and the old York section was good. Not just paintings but a mixture of arts, also lots to do for kids too.

If you like art this is well worth a visit. Newly updated, there are a number of exhibits. They include some very old portrait art as well as much that is York specific. There is also, currently, some really good pottery etc.

The art gallery is a cultural hub the city and its residents should be proud of. The staff I spoke to were helpful and clearly explained the fees and the membership card which for £22/ year or £11/ year for York residents (which gets you discounts in the shops and cafes and 2 other museums) is an utter bargain. The... More

We visited this gallery having read the review of its reopening in The Times. Our expectations were not very high because it seemed the focus was on ceramics, which is not our cup of tea(sorry. But we found it an enchanting place with some excellent works, including in the ceramics. A very well done refurbishment

This is an attraction in York which is probably less visited than most, but there is something for everyone and well worth a look. It is pay to enter but at £7.50 not overly expensive and is free with the various national Art Cards. This not the biggest of galleries, just over two floors with the upper floor given over... More

Just wanted to say thank you for such an amazing day. I took my niece who is 8 years old. I thought she would have got bored within 20 minutes...but no chance! We were there for over 2 hours. We had loads of fun sketching, colouring, making collages. She absolutely loved it and so did I. She found out all... More

As so many galleries are free to the public you expect a lot to be on offer when you pay a considerable sum to visit a gallery. Sadly most of the exhibits were uninspiring. The fact that they make York locals pay for entry is also quite shocking. If a gallery goes to all that effort to close for a... More
