FREE FUN IN YORK... aka The Fabulous York Cat Trail provides both visitors and locals with the opportunity to find and photo the numerous statues of cats which are on York's old buildings. These were put there to frighten away rats and mice. The statues were also thought to ward off wandering evil spirits and to bestow good luck and good health on people. Enjoy the trail... it's FREE! You are warmly invited to download it from our website, or to pick it up from our Shambles based shop

As an avid cat lover and having recently moved to York I knew that I had to complete the Cat Trail. It's free with leaflets to pick up from outside the lucky cat shop and the trail itself is super fun! It takes you through the centre of York so you get a bit of sightseeing if you're only in... My wife came out of a store with a map of the cat trail and it provided a lot of fun. If you don't know the story, York has a history of people putting life-like cat statues on the outside of houses. Depending on who you ask and where you read, it was for luck, keeping the rats away or... More

Lots of fun on this trail! It took us about 2 and a half hours to complete but was fun enough to mean there were no complaints from the children! The hidden cats are a good mix of well hidden yet findable to relatively obvious, which meant that interest was well sustained. We found all 22 cats and had a... More

Even if you are not the cat person, your visit of York is not complete without hunting for all the 22 cats alongside the York Cat Trail! Pick up a leaflet with map of cats' locations at York Glass shop in Shambles and start looking! I managed to find all of them and really enjoyed it - and there was... More

What a great thing to do, to get you round the city. 22 cats on walls, rooftops and window ledges, waiting for you to spot them! A free tourist attraction that was fun

A great opportunity to see the city from a different angle. See town architectural details and historic buildings of this beautiful city.... have fun finding the cat statues.

Lots of fun hunting down all the cats, sadly one was obscured by ivy and we had to get a bit of help from Google! It is a great was to see the city and have fun for free when so few things are free these days!

You can pick up a leaflet for this in the tourist information, or outside the glass shop in the shambles. It is interesting and takes you around quite a lot of the city. There are clues to find 21 cats, mostly situated on the walls or windowsills of buildings. Some of them are quite difficult to spot. I thought it was... More

York is a lovely city to visit and walk around - we spotted the first 'ghost' statue cat while exploring. Then we found the cat gallery store and picked up the cat trail leaflet - from then we were on a mission! It is a great way to see the sights of York and would be great fun for all... More

We have been visiting York for years and have just done this for the first time. We had a party of 8 ages ranging from 3-65 and surprisingly (how much fun can a cat trail be??), everyone enjoyed it! We know York very well, but this is a great way to see the city and is really great fun. A... More
