Experience the threat of nuclear war at York Cold War Bunker! On a fascinating guided tour, learn how volunteers would have played a vital role in ensuring that Britain could survive a nuclear attack. The atmospheric 1960s semi-subterranean bunker is just as it was when stood down in 1991, and the one hour guided tour is enhanced by a short film. Summer opening (April - October): Wednesday - Sunday, plus bank holidays, between 10am and 6pm. Entrance by guided tour only, at the following times: 10:00, 11:15. 11:45, 13:00, 14:15, 15:30, 17:00.

Limited onsite parking, but plenty available nearby on the street. A one hour tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Well worth a visit if you can remember the hysteria at the time of the cold war.

Visited on 06.09.14 and went on 5pm tour, didn't get the name of the lady who led this tour but massive thanks to her, she was very informative and knowledgeable and her style meant everything was very interesting. Hour long tour was so informative and interesting that it felt like it was over in 10 mins! We arrived a minute... More

Had no idea this place was here and to think it was operational when we were operational in the city.

An unusual way to spend an hour of your time. Really interesting with fantastic guides. Really worth driving the short distance out of York to find it as you will find out something new and exciting and the guides are adept at presenting the info in a humouress and informative manner. Go and visit!

Saw this on English Heritage and I did deliberate as to whether this would be interesting and what can the tour show you and keep you interested for one hour. Relax its great. The tour guide was informative and interesting and kept the visit going at a comfortable pace. Well worth a visit.

Brilliant. Enjoyed by my wife, my 8 year old son and myself. Great tour guides and a very fascinating piece of recent local history. It's a little bit outside York but easy to get to via a number 1 bus (takes about 10-15 mins). We heard of it by accident but it's a must see

Really enjoyed this place. The staff new everything about it and were very informative and friendly. The tour takes an hour, be prepared for a lot of information as the guides tell you every detail. I'd recomend this visit but I'd perhaps say not suitable for really young children as there is a lot of standing round and listening. Well... More

I came up to York for the bank holiday weekend from Kent. Having been to Goddards - a National Trust property, home to Noel Terry of the former Terry's Chocolate Factory - on Friday, we were looking for something nearby to do on Saturday afternoon. A quick look on the English Heritage iPhone app and I decided the bunker was... More

Worth a visit if you are interested in the Cold War, this place is hidden behind a block of flats in the suburbs of York. It's a bit of a way from the centre, so probably best to use transport to get there. Entrance is at certain times, so make sure you check the website or you could be stood... More

The cold war bunker in York has been preserved by English Heritage as it was when operational. It was a little chilling to think of that tie period and realize as I read the chronology of the Cuban missile crisis how real the possibility of nuclear war was! Very informative about a period it would be best for us not... More
