At the top of the famous 99 steps, St Mary's Church is a very interesting church to visit. Outside you can find amazing views across the whole of Whitby and over the sea. The inside has very unusual box shaped pews and the local guides love to give you a free guided tour and explanation of the layout. In late April... More

This church is wonderful and very unusual in that all the pews are boxed in. There are also three pulpits. It sits atop 199 steps but it's worth the climb.

The church at the top of the 199 steps st mary's, is a norman church and built around 1110 but the current church dates from about 1700. It is situated on the towns east cliff and it over looks the river esk estuary. The church graveyard is a setting for dracula,by bram stoker

Set at the top of the199 steps, is the very atmospheric church of St Mary complete with Gallery pews, & grave yard. The position of this church really is open to all of the elements on the cliff tops, well worth a visit.

This church is very unusual and there is not another one like it in the country. There is a shop that you can get information about St Mary's Church.

This little church has box pews I have never been in a church like this before.I can imagine one for each family (well off ones) The pulpit is one of the tallest that I have ever seem but I suppose with all those box pews the vicar would need it.Surrounded by a ancient churchyard that is slowly falling into the... Visited St Mary's Church at the top of the 199 steps recently. Beautiful building which boasts so much history. Stunning views across Whitby too so well worth the effort.

The interior shows the hierarchy that exists in the community, with larger stalls for the wealthy. Best time to visit is Christmas, when the whole church is filled with decorated Christmas trees. Great views of the town from the graveyard too, and close to the Abbey of course.
