Climbing the famous 199 steps does not only lead to the Abbey but to this beautiful church. The churchyard is perched on the cliff top with brilliant views across the town and out to sea. The church itself is one of my all time favourites. The box pews with names on each of who was allowed to use them and... More

I love churches and this one was free to get in and so oddly laid out with plenty of little quirky bits of information. The graveyard was fantastic and the views were breathtaking from the far end over the cliffs and bay of Whitby. Worth a visit if you can face the 199 steps up to it!

We were walking down the 199 steps from the Abbey past this church when bell ringing was taking place on Thursday evening - the amazing stormy skies, beautiful bells, stunning seascape and wonderful views of Whitby brought a big lump to ones throat and a tear to the eye...Absolutely beautiful.

what an outstanding view from the church by day, even better at sunset! you can understand where Bram Stoker got his ideas from.

Steeped in history with lots of nooks and crannies. The information film that is constantly running is one of the most interesting I have ever watched. Well made, well written and definitely worth taking time to watch.

One of the many churches in Whitby! This is a Roman Catholic church. We visited on a weekday and were immediately struck by the strange architecture inside which was a mixture of medieval design with very congested early modern box pews. The pulpit was also interesting - right in the middle of the church, presumably because the front of the... More

A wonderful trip in time, box pews, high pulpit with listening tubes for the preacher's deaf relatives below. etc. Think the scene in the whaler's church in the film "Moby Dick" and you have it in one.

An unusual and unspoilt church - worth engaging the staff to discover more about its fascinating features. Well worth a visit.

At the top of the 199 steps, st Mary's church offers great views over the whole of Whitby and the Harbour. The Church itself is old and interesting. The abbey is a bit further on, and probably worth a visit if you are an English Heritage member, but I thought the entrance fee was a bit steep for the whole... More
