Standing on the East Cliff, quite close to the abbey, St. Mary's Church looks down over the town of Whitby. The church's origins are Norman and, not only the tower, but other parts of the church have crenellations, giving it somewhat the appearance of a castle. In fact the whole of the church and its graveyard offer some intriguing features... More

Quite an unusual interior layout - pews all in 'boxes' and more so a wide church than a long one. Very historical, worth visiting and contributing to. Latest visit feb 2016 but been many times before. The 199 steps are a must.

Pleasant enough old church on a hill with a view over the harbour and the town. Small gift shop with friendly staff.

I managed the 199 steps but needed to sit down so went inside this cute little church. The ladies were clearing away the Christmas trees and I got chatting to one of them. She told me she would like to have a go at pottery and I told her I would love to have a go at bell ringing. Someone... More

If you can make it up the 199 steps (although I counted 202) you will be rewarded with being able to visit this amazing and quite educational church. The ladies selling in the front area to raise funds are both informative and friendly. Need cash, preferably small , as in pound coins as they do not keep a big kitty... More

Another historic attraction as you reach top of steps. It's a little oasis of calm and attractive and compact inside. Graveyard makes an interesting diversion and views outside lovely.

if you can manage the 199 steps up towards the Abbey (run by Heritage) you will arrive firstly at this delightful church and grave yard.this is free to visit and had fabulously atmospheric view of Whitby, the harbour and the sea. Its connections to Bram Stoker's tale Dracula gives it an even more eerie feeling. the church is still used... More

Recently stayed in Whitby on a Christmas break and on Christmas Eve morning our coach took us to St. Mary's Church to see the Christmas tree display. There must have been about 100 trees contributed from local businesses and what a display, well worth the visit. The church is unique and in a beautiful location next to Whitby abbey with... More

Went during the Christmas Tree display, lovely to see all the contributions of the local community. Also a magnificent church in its own right.
