Well worth the walk up the steps or down from the Abbey if you've caught the bus! The grave yard with its headstones give you an insight in to life at Whitby.

Very interesting, unusual box pews and more informActive than the overpriced abbey ruins. A very interesting church yard, the oldest headstone we found was 1660, there may be older than that though many have no letters left due to the harsh weather conditions. If nothing else the wonderful position with great views over both the town and harbour make it... More

We havent seen a chuch like this before. Very old, very unusual set up for the pews with doors on! Also a large original stove still used to heat the church today. There is a lovely mid 18th century three tiered pulpit. High church c of e so candles etc to light in memory of loved ones or prayers if... More

A spectacular setting for a very beautiful church. A really warm welcome awaits all visitors to St Mary's church from the lovely people who run the very well stocked gift shop at the entrance. The interior is very different and its history so interesting it's well worth a visit. The 199 steps to the church also provide a good physical... More

Beautiful step back in time. Quite a climb up the steps but worth it. The graveyard is wonderful, with amazing views of the Abbey and over Whitby. Look for Tom Thumb's tomb :-)

Entry FREE to enter and look around, I recommend a small donation for the building even if it's to light a candle for a loved one £0.30 Building Well kept for its... More

After the walk up the 199 steps to reach the church the views over Whitby and the sea from the top of the hill are wonderful and then the church, it is lovely. From the wood burner that keeps the church warm, to the parish chest which is over 300 years old, the unusual pews this church is a pleasure... More

Quaint. Loved the ear trumpet used by the rector's deaf wife, I think. Old fashioned high wooden partitioned pews.
