What is it about us and scenic rail journeys. The weather matched what we encountered many years ago when we took a scenic rail journey from the west to east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. We purchased our return tickets for Carlisle-Settle, grabbed a coffee and boarded the train. There were only 2 carriages and very few... More

Brilliant, loved the Ribblehead Viaduct, and the Volunteers that join the train and take time to keep the trip running. More

Travelled from Horton in Ribblesdale to Carlisle on this train. No discounts on this train for booking in advance unlike other main line stations. Found the price quite expensive. On the positive side superb views and lovely 'Olde Worlde' train stations. More

This journey is best on a clear day when the views are second to none! See the Yorkshire Three Peaks in all their splendour, and marvel at the engineering of the Ribblehead Viaduct. Go as far as Carlisle, or alight at any of the stations, maybe to walk. Friends of the Settle Carlisle Railway produce a leaflet of their guided... More

As most people will know, this line was saved from closure and I'm truly glad it was. The line does through some wonderful wild scenery and passes over the magnificent Ribblehead viaduct. I've never done the trip on one of the steam hauled services that happen from time to time but even from a modern multiple unit, it's a great... More

I loved my journey on this train, I travelled from Leeds to Carlisle and the scenery is stunning. The railway stations from Settle to Carlisle are just gorgeous and are a credit to the voluntary people who look after them. They also have voluntary guides on the train. More

An early start from Cambridge, up to Carlise and back in the day via the spectacular Ribbleshead viaduct (one of 17) on the Settle Carlisle railway. Two changes, Peterborough and Leeds, and then onto the 2 carriage, regular service train. Once out of the Yorkshire wool towns, the train climbs steadily up to Settle. From here, it was simply spectacular.... More
