Although there have been various earlier entertainment buildings on the site the reconstructed Adelphi Theatre, with its art deco interiors, opened to the public in December 1930 with Jessie Matthews starring in Ever Green. The front-of-house areas of the Adelphi Theatre were restored to their original lustre and extravagance in 1993 when Andrew Lloyd Webber became co-owner and opened his musical production of Sunset Boulevard. Other famous productions at the Adelphi Theatre include Gertrude Lawrence in Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant, Ivor Novello’s The Dancing Years, Bless The Bride, Beatrice Lillie as Auntie Mame, Van Johnson in The Music Man, Lionel Bart’s Blitz! and Maggie May, Charlie Girl with Anna Neagle, a revival of Me and My Girl originally starring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson and in the Adelphi Theatre’s longest run (over nine years), the new Broadway production of Kander and Ebb’s Chicago. Revivals of Evita and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat have proved enormously popular. More recently, the theatre played host to the worldwide premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Love Never Dies.

Good performances and voices all round but the tunes are some of the naffest I've sat through at the theatre. The gist of this show is that drag queens are fabulous darling and that six inch heeled, pvc boots are pretty much the only thing that will make anyone happy. Heterosexual men (of course) are pathetic, two dimensional scum in this... More

Sadly, my friend and I were not at all impressed with this very bland theatre and the show itself just didn't hold our attention enough for us to stay beyond the interval, in spite of the gorgeous red boots.

From the opening moments (for some reason reminiscent of Acorn Antiques the musical) the show is effortlessly entertaining. A musical that that belts them out with a vengeance, without leaving you feeling patronised. The drag queens are (thankfully) thrown at you full force, with no apology (or indeed explanation. Other than they will work for cocktails). Not one of the... More

Went along on Saturday having very little idea what the show was about, I absolutely loved it.The casting is spot on and the show is slick with a real feel good factor. The story is sad in parts and you really get into the emotions being portrayed, it is of course also very funny in lots of parts If anyone... More

I have never seen an audience so animated so quickly by a show. Fast paced, brilliant costumes, funny but poignant. We were nervous about whether it was a good idea to go as we had seen the film and wondered whether it would measure up; it surely did.

The best night I have had at the theatre...ever. A great story outlining complexities of human relationships with sensitivity and joy. Fantastic set, good characterisation, excellent costumes, drag queens en-mass, singing, dancing and humour. The show was still in rehearsal when we saw it. If it is this good now I cannot imagine how good it will be in a... More
