Although there have been various earlier entertainment buildings on the site the reconstructed Adelphi Theatre, with its art deco interiors, opened to the public in December 1930 with Jessie Matthews starring in Ever Green. The front-of-house areas of the Adelphi Theatre were restored to their original lustre and extravagance in 1993 when Andrew Lloyd Webber became co-owner and opened his musical production of Sunset Boulevard. Other famous productions at the Adelphi Theatre include Gertrude Lawrence in Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant, Ivor Novello’s The Dancing Years, Bless The Bride, Beatrice Lillie as Auntie Mame, Van Johnson in The Music Man, Lionel Bart’s Blitz! and Maggie May, Charlie Girl with Anna Neagle, a revival of Me and My Girl originally starring Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson and in the Adelphi Theatre’s longest run (over nine years), the new Broadway production of Kander and Ebb’s Chicago. Revivals of Evita and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat have proved enormously popular. More recently, the theatre played host to the worldwide premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Love Never Dies.

Spacious art deco theatre. The staff were very understanding when after a hellish tube journey we ran in after curtain up. Shame show had to close early, the audience loved it when I visited.

Great show, we saw it on the last night of it`s run and it`s a real shame it`s ending. We were expecting a bit of a party atmosphere being the last show but the cast seemed genuinely sad that it`s finished !

My first time at the Adelphi Theatre and was not disappointed. First impressions were that it seemed a small theatre even though its capacity is 1500. This gives the theatre a very friendly cosy family feeling. We had stall seating and this to was very comfortable. The staff were welcoming and helpful. We saw the last showing of Made in... More

Easy access from the tube, and helpful and cheerful staff but the seats are very close like a cheap airline and it was flaming hot inside due to a warm weekend; the bathrooms also seem a bit inadequate in numbers (and it wasn't a full house). Otherwise, price was really quite good it had easy access to seats from anywhere.... More

Great show and wonderful theatre but totally spoilt by aggressive front of house staff that show no care for those that are disabled. Atrocious and confrontational approach by staff which spoilt the entire experience of the theatre and show. It was clear that other patrons were having similar problems. Lovely theatre let down by poor customer care. Sad.

I visited this theatre to see Made In Dagenham which was a great musical with excellent scenery and catchy tunes. The acting was faultless: Barbara Castle was my favourite, great personality and an amazing song. I hope the production tours and becomes a bigger hit. It is sad that it is closing in London. The facilities and prices are typical... More

Was lucky to use the time out vouchers and see the show for 15 per ticket. First off the staff were friendly and welcoming. Now on to the show. I hadn't seen the film so didn't know what to expect. It was fantastic. The singing voices were clear and amazing. Both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The standing... More

Great musical, excellent scenery. Catching songs and faultless acting. Babara castle was my favourite, great dresses and personality. Good views even in upper circle. Child in seat in front of me was sitting forward part blocking my view. I hope the production tours, it will become a bigger hit.

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic evening at the Adelphi. Having seen the film we didn't know what to expect but were not disappointed. The humour, acting and singing was brilliant although the language was crude but appropriate for the scenario. Facilities and prices are typical of old theatres in London. I.e. Basic and expensive, however behind the curtain... More
