Owner description: Leighton House Museum is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton. The only purpose-built studio-house open to the public in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most remarkable buildings of the nineteenth century, containing a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries.Built to Leighton’s precise requirements, the house was extended and embellished over the 30 years that he lived in it. From modest beginnings it grew into a ‘private palace of art’ featuring the extraordinary Arab Hall with its golden dome, intricate mosaics and walls lined with beautiful Islamic tiles.

I've never considered Lord Leighton as a truly great painter but he certainly had truly great taste. The interior is a sumptuous example of victorian wealth and style. If you visited most of the large museums and are looking for a more intimate experience this is well worth a visit.

Sumptuous décor and an interesting insight into one of the Victorian era's most famous artists. Extremely jealous of his studio space! Half price for National Trust members.

well, especially because of the hall then, consisting of 3 parts, all extremely beautiful, perhaps even better than anything we saw in the middle east - in my london top 10!

Leighton's house and studio are carefully restored and remarkable because the outside of the house is so plain and like all others on the street but once inside you are amazed by the tiles, the artwork and the beauty of the house. Make sure to have one of the docents conduct the tour. You don't need a lot of time... More

An authentic villa of a painter. There was a beautiful oriental bath. Decoration, furniture, painting were all very nice.

I live in London but had only been here once in the past, sometime before the restoration work that was done a few years ago. I didn't remember it too well apart from the "Arab Hall" but having been again this weekend my impression is that there is now much more to see than there was. A lot of research... More

Dear Alison, Thank you very much for your kind words; we are glad you enjoyed your visit to Leighton House. As you rigthly pointed out, between September 2008 and April 2010, Leighton House closed for extensive refurbishment and restoration. This was an important moment in the history of the house; drawing on many period descriptions and extensive physical evidence to... More

In town for a concert with a big of afternoon and a friend suggested Leighton House. I asked if there was a tea room. She said no. I tutted, but went anyway. So glad I did! Leighton's stunning house in Kensington is a prime example of high Victorian aestheticism. The most beautiful room in the house is the Arab Hall, with turquoise tiles, some by William de Morgan I believe. Lord Leighton was a great painter and at the center of the art scene in London. The house has a great collection of paintings by him... More
