I couldn't believe it when I saw Ashley's review. I visited Honister on friends' recommendation last week - a fantastic place so much history and atmosphere, brought to life by Rowland, the guide and Becky who drove the bus...... BUT when we arrived and asked where the tours were a south African woman pointed at a sign and walked off!... More

My partner and I have been regular visitors to the Lake District for the last nine years and we always try to include a visit to Honister Slate Mine. The staff are always friendly and very helpful, we've been on Mine Tours with Mark's Mum, who's passion for Honister and Mark shine through every time. The Via Ferrata is a... More

unique experience, personal guiding through the mine; most interesting. We even had a 'hands-on' try at splitting slate.

I've always fancied rock climbing but not really fancied putting myself in exposed positions hanging from a rock face with just a few small outcrops to cling onto, so this seemed like the ideal opportunity to try it with the safety of having your route mapped out by iron steps to climb up (and for the experience before heading to... We arrived here in wet and windy weather. The views are fantastic. We went into the cafe for drinks and it was not very welcoming. Hard bench seats,a smelly local labrador, draughty doors opening and to be honest miserable kitchen staff. I asked for decaf tea.. none..! We had the mars bar cake cappuccino and a tea. Reasonable prices. We... More

We hiked up for our breakfast form the valley below, arriving just after 10. The cafe was open so we asked for bacon and eggs. Can't do it. Why not? It's the morning. Sullen girl who seemed to take pleasure in turning us away. Not on the menu - so we ordered a bacon roll. Can't do it, it's the... More

Have been looking forward to visiting the slate mine for some time so decided to drive from Carlisle for a visit on Bank Holiday Monday with friends. We arrived at noon and thought we would visit the cafe first for some refreshments. We arrived at the counter (it wasn't busy) and asked for a Cheese & Tomato Panini to be... More

Visited here as boyfriend had looked and was interested in the Extreme trip. We didn't do that one! Toured around the mine and told various interesting facts, the road driving to the mine is an experience! Only tip would be to wrap up warm, we arrived on a day where it was lashing down with rain and had coats and... More

Just back from the Lakes and one of our adventures, beside climbing several of the mountains was doing the Extreme Via Ferrata here. We booked the morning session (9.00) and it was just us 2 with the guide. Got kitted up with helmet and harness then walked up the hill to the start. The views are absolutely fantastic, right down...
