Although a fairly fit 67 year old who did some rock climbing in my younger days, and. some grade 3 scrambling in more recent times, I was expecting the "Via Ferrarta Extreme" to be something of a dissappointment. How wrong could I be! Climbing up and down the metal ladders and traversing metal stanchions all fixed to vertical rockfaces was... More

If you are staying in the Lake District anywhere near Derwent Water or Buttermere its definitely worth a visit to Honister Slate Mine where you can do the Via Ferrata. As long as you are reasonably fit you can do it and once you have you won't regret it. The views from being on the side of a very high... More

The drive up to the mine from one end and down again towards Buttermere makes for a lovely day out - a mix of learning about the local history and culture and the stunning beauty of the district. Take some time to dip your feet in the nearby stream, swing past the little ice cream shop as you get to... More

Right at the top of Honister Pass above Borrowdale, it takes about 25 minutes along a very narrow and scenic road from Keswick - watch out for buses!!!!! they run right to the site if you don't have a car. It is an old slate mine where you can do a mine tour and an adventure climb up to the... More

A small group of us did the xtream which was brilliant fun. At first I was terrified but once I got going it was great. The rope bridge was scary but I felt safe. I'd do it again.

With such a rich and fascinating industrial heritage, it is a shame that there aren't more places like this that can still carry on centuries old businesses and combine them to come up with fun and educational experiences. Once a derelict mine, one person made the rash decision to buy it, reopen it, and provide mine tours. It has expanded... More

Stunning Drive to the mine - no time to go in as we were on a fleeting visit, but the mine itself looks interesting from the places to see in Lakeland brochures

The Journey from Keswick to Hoisted is a lovely experience with steep and winding roads. You can stop and admire the nature and beautiful landscapes .After you pass the Honister pass on top of the hill is the Hoisted Slate Mine. We were told it is one of the few working Slate Mines. Due to paucity of time we did... More
