This beautiful house on the shore of Coniston water was the home of John Ruskin, the artist, writer and social reformer. The position and beauty of the house and garden make it worth a visit in its own right but there is also an excellent exhibition on Ruskin's life, work and many interests. We came away inspired to read more... More

The home of John Ruskin displays his letters and papers as well as many of his paintings and those of his contemporaries. There is an informative video on the life of this remarkable man whose genious led him to depression and mental illness. Well worth a visit to the place where modern society was shaped.

Lovely house to visit but the highlights are the views of the lake and the fells and the Gondola steamboat ride to get there from Coniston Village. Nice gardens.

If you are interested in this period of British history Ruskin is a very interesting person to investigate along with his friends. Trying to imagine the house as a centre of culture and reform gives an incite to the man. His obvious foibles add further interest. Defiantly worth a visit.

Superb views across and down Coniston Inca from Ruskin's own private niche. Lovely artworks to admire and hillside walks to enjoy in and around the house. Great to cycle over the hill (steep) from Hawkshead with a well-deserved free-wheel most of the way the way there, if the mad 4 wheel drive (SUV) drivers allow you.

Went to John Ruskin's house via the Gondola on Lake Coniston. Although the Gondala is owned by the NT, (and we are current members) we were still charged almost £10.00 for the boat trip which we believed included and offered a discount into Brantwood House - How Wrong!! On arrival to John Ruskin's house, we were charged another £8.00 each... More

Beautiful place, amazing views and wonderful house and gardens. It is a place not to be missed. The café is also situated overlooking the lake and sells lovely food.
