Annie the personal tour guide made the place. Small school room where 70 boys were taught; Headmaster's room and one other above. Not big, but Annie brought it to life and patiently answered my children's incessant questions. We really enjoyed the space, atmosphere and welcome. Kids free, £2.50 adults. Bargain. Definitely pop in, if only to see the Wordsworth penknife... More

Exceptionally knowledgable guide, able to relate easily to a varied audience. Got a real insight into the history of the school where Wordsworth had grown up going to school. Great value for money too, with children going free!

You just can't go to Hawkshead without visiting the Grammar school. It's a credit to all involved that the refurbishment and continued maintenance of the school allows the general public to have a glimpse of schools centuries ago and it is an absolutely fantastic place to see. I defy anyone to visit this place and not be impressed and interested... More

What a great experience to "dive" into the past with a great guide who "revives" this building and the old school furniture! Listening to the guide helps you to imagine what it was like to go to school 500 years ago.

Seeing where William Wordsworth went to school was amazing. Seeing the overall history of the area, especially when you come from a young country like Australia is awe inspiring.

Especially loved the wood carvings and the guy who was manning the school was very helpful and informative and seemed to genuinely enjoy answering all our questions.

Easily accessible on the edge of Hawkshead Village, Wordsworth's school, where you can see, allegedly, where he carved his name on the desks.

The gentleman who was the official there gave us lots of information on the school and the pupils, which brought it alive. Fascinating place.

We were told about the old grammar school when we were visiting Hawkshead last week. The gentleman there brought the place to life with his information. Fascinating place with carved desks and walls done by students who used their quill-sharpening penknives to great effect.
