It was great to visit a local museum which does what it does really well. Its main features are local celebrities John Ruskin and Donald Campbell (how they'd have hated each other!), Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, and local WW1 hero James Hewitson. But all the things which make Coniston - geology, archaeology, mining and mountain rescue (Britain's first ever... More

I loved the layout of this museum, I learnt absolutely loads about John Ruskin, the art gallery was brilliant and I also learnt loads about the blue birds.

A wealth of resources in a clean and neatly laid out venue. There is plenty here to occupy an hour or so on a wet day. Not sure how busy the museum gets as when we visited we had the entire place to ourselves.

Our family paid a visit to this little museum. We really wanted to see the exhibits on Donald Campbell, we were not disappointed. I have sons aged 24, 21and 17 and thought this would interest them. Even my 14 year old daughter thought it was great. The museum is very small but there is so much local history packed into... More

I didn't expect much being so small but it was very interesting and the staff were very helpful. A bit of a hidden gem.

This is a really good museum to visit on a wet Coniston afternoon- of which of course there are plenty in the Lake District! We found the Donald Campbell part of the museum absolutely fascinating even down to the great mans racing overalls retrieved from the lake following his fateful crash so many years ago. The videos that the museum... More

Brilliant little gem of a museum. Really interesting to learn about the bluebird and all its history. Could have easily spent a good few hours exploring and reading more about the history. Highly recommended!!!!

We arrived late afternoon. Staff said we only needed one hour to tour the museum. 2.5 hours later the museum closed and we could have stayed for another 30 minutes. Hidden gem.

I'd not realised the important connexion John Ruskin had with Coniston before visiting this centre. Living near to Sheffield, I'm very aware of his passion regarding the education of working people, but the displays and narratives at this museum explained much more clearly, how he was a man ahead of his time. Of course, the history of the Campbell's land... More

Everything from the early rock climbers and Langdale axes to the Bluebird story and ... Ruskin. Indeed something for everyone and well worth a look. Highly recommended.
