I managed to sneak a few hours in the Golden Rule the night before my wedding. To be able to unwind in one of my favourite pubs, before the big day was superb and as always bar staff were very friendly. Popped in the next day for a swift pre wedding pint and we were met warmly by the barman... More

We have been going in the Golden Rule for over 25 years, love the place and the people, beer is always excellent. A really well run pub by John and all his staff who amazingly remember you even after five or six months, especially with the countless numbers of people who go in ! The Rule is a great place... After 30+ years at the helm John still serves the perfect pint & the perfect pork pie. Snug by the fire in winter, sat out in the yard with the summer back end sun, or having good crack in the darts room you'll find this lakeland institution hard to beat. Thanks for all the years, and pints, John. Pubs rarely... More

Absolutely love this pub, always look forward to a visit here when we are in Ambleside for the weekend. Real ale is perfectly kept and with a great choice, I think there was seven different ales on the go this last weekend. Have always found the staff friendly with no issues whatsoever. We love the mix of locals and visitors... More

We visited half a dozen pubs in Ambleside during our stay and this was by far our favourite. It has everything needed to qualify as a great British pub, open fire, dark wood and brass, good range of beer and whisky, simple but tasty food options(pork pie or scotch egg), very friendly staff plus peace and quiet(no music!). If you... More

The Golden Rule you could think it is: " the ethic of reciprocity a maxim, ethical code or morality that essentially states either of the following: One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself or One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated " or just a pub. Enjoyed a quick lunchtime drink here during a recent stay in Ambleside. It is a pub which is obviously very popular with the locals, although we, as tourists, were made to feel equally at home by the genial mine host. The pub has many little rooms, with an open field in the main bar area. There is an excellent range... More

Old school perfection! This pub will always flourish due to the fantastic beer, superb staff and overall ambience. My favourite pub as a youth and now my family favourite, always a warm welcome at the Rule!

Good old pub with great atmosphere and good choice of ales. The Scotch egg was a delight. We got a little stuck in Ambleside having been drawn in by this place, and no taxi companies were forthcoming. Much to our thanks the Landlord dropped us home, which was such a touching gesture, something that has made our trip to the... More
