Lovely little traditional pub, good service, well stocked bar with local ales. Pub has a lovely atmosphere with people popping in after a walk on the fells, or giving a couple before eating out.

At last, a pub that is just a pub. No food, music, stag parties or tv (ok there are pies but we'd already eaten). Beer well kept and very friendly staff. Outside seating round the back.

Why didn't we go into this pub on the first day of our holiday, and not the last?! We'll just have to come back. What a great place to spend a couple of hours with a pint or three. I used to work in a pub like this - but that was nearly 30 years ago. How lovely not to... More

Best pub in Ambleside and a real one at that. No mediocre pub food here, just fine local ales served by friendly staff. A real gem. If you want a meal, go elsewhere. If you want a decent pint in a proper pub, this is the place.

After a hike around the Fairfield Horseshoe, we finished the walk by stopping off at the Golden Cup. What a great pub. Lovely ales and how a pub should be. We sat outside in the beer garden enjoying our beer and having a whale of a time with like-minded people. Overall, a cracking pub with superb beer and a great... More

We visit Ambleside about 4 times a year and always enjoy visiting The Golden Rule. A good old fashioned "proper" pub with friendly bar staff and a good selection of real ales.

By far the best pub in Ambleside, having passed the golden rule on my way to glenriding or brother water, and stayed in ambleside without giving the golden rule a second thought we decided to call on our last visit ,Ay and what a gem, plenty of ale to choose from clean cosy and warm. and dog friendly.

Me, my better half and our two dogs found this place almost by accident. It was initially our second choice after the neighbouring Unicorn pub because The Golden Rule doesn't do food as such (although they do sell locally produced scotch eggs and pork pies!!). The Unicorn was extremely busy and quite noisy so we opted to pop round the... More
