On walking into the golden rule its immediately apparent that this pub makes no pretensions at being anything other than a truly traditional pub. I loved it and it's oak beams, horse brasses, cozy atmosphere and good local ales. No massive blaring TV showing sports, what heaven. No food other than pies and scotch eggs, quite right! There aren't many... More

Fantastic pub - lovely calm atmosphere and a great selection of cask ales. Barmen all take great pride in serving a good pint. Popular with walkers late afternoon.

With seven good real ales on hand pump at all times as well as a selection of bottled beers, ciders and nice wines this pub appeals to all. But the good quality and variety of real ales, served at the right temperature by knowledgeable staff, particularly provides an attraction for those lovers of the traditional brewed pint. No visit to... More

What a lovely nostalgic atmosphere. Our golden rule when visiting Ambleside is not to miss out on 'The Golden Rule'. Superb choice of real ale and it's refreshing to see an establishment that has not had to rely on producing food - it's a pub in the old fashioned sense of the word. The gleaming bar with its array of... More

I've previously stated on TripAdvisor that this is my favourite pub in the Lake District, I'm pleased to say it still is! Visited here both nights of our weekend away in Ambleside. Excellent choice of well kept real ales, Dizzy blonde being my particular favourite. Staff are friendly always recognizing us even though we only visit a few times a... More

Nice pub with good beers and a very simple menu of pork pies and sandwiches, which were well made and delicious. A nice spot for a drink in the late afternoon. Thank you.

My partner like this pub more than me. Great selection of real ales. The staff were very friendly and the pub was clean. From looking at the photos of the wall, the pub hasn't changed in years There is no music and I found it not to have a lot of atmosphere, but that was the type of pub it... More

We seem to have struck lucky or done our research well on Trip Advisor as yet another Ambleside staple received top marks. This pub is an absolute diamond. Excellent choice of ales served at the right temperatures and the barman even made sure that the ice cubes in my laphroaig were the right size and quantity. A pub where only... More
