The best pub in the lake district by a country mile. Friendly, good beer well kept, open fire and excellent scotch eggs. The back yard gets sun into the early evening and even in early April we sat out for a while. Seek it out and also the nearby Garside butchers the source of the scotch eggs the second reason... More

We visited every day on our 3 day trip to Ambleside. There is a warm welcome from the staff & the open fire. Plenty of choice of good draught beers & lagers. Good place to visit after a walk in the fresh air.

Went there for a well earned drink after a walk on the fells early March. The barman was welcoming and all 7 ladies look a seat next to the fire. All was going well until the landlord came over and was very rude to us saying the fire was for everyone and made us sit away from it. I very... More

Thank you for your review, and I am sorry that you found the landlord to be rude. You are right in saying that the pub is for everyone, just as the fire is, and people sitting directly in front of it deprive everyone else in the pub of the opportunity of pleasure from it. The request perhaps could have been... More

After the bars in town what a welcome surprise that there is a proper pub in Ambleside. Excellent beers, homely atmosphere, lovely real fire, a great place to spend a few hours after a hard days walking. Home from home. Don't miss a visit to this watering hole, a must !

When in Ambleside we stay 30 seconds from this pub and always make sure we pop in for a pint, it has a nice relaxed atmosphere with its number of small rooms and traditional beers. We spent a drunken night in here in November playing ludo in one of the back rooms!!! A bit random but great fun. Ps try... More

We are always looking for a good place to drink where we can also take our dog. And this is a great place. Lots of rooms and great selection of wines.

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but this place would be in my top three lake district pubs. Brilliant beer, open fire, several rooms, dog friendly and great staff. To plagiarize another breweries saying it is "unspoilt by progress" It is off the beaten track but worth sniffing out. Also if you like Scotch eggs, try theirs, they're... More
