Lovely old worldy pub.... warm staff, great selection of beers to please my hubby's thirsty interest! Just wish we still had a dog as it appeared to be ultra dog friendly too!

Visited this pub again as it is my favourite in Ambleside! Received the usual warm welcome and the beer was superb as always! Was lovely to sit and have a drink and a chat with the better half without the usual background music of most pubs! Will return here again like I always do!

Each time that my wife and myself visit Ambleside, which is usually a week or so just after Christmas, we always call into The Golden Rule on most days that we are here in town and it's just about obligatory after walking the local trails. We have always managed to meet and converse with some very nice people in this... More

I stay in Ambleside at least six times each year. I always drink and spend a lot of money in the Golden Rule.On each occasion the beer / atmosphere are always excellent. However, my last visit was unreal. My family and friends (13 adults, 2 children, 2 well behaved dogs) went into the pub about 8pm on 30th December. We... More

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent visit to the Golden Rule and I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit. We have a long-standing policy of not allowing children in the pub after 9pm, and this is clearly displayed on notices at both entrances, though as a regular visitor... More

Popped in on a wet afternoon midweek for a pint or two last month whilst staying in Keswick. We walked in to a near empty pub, the only sound in the pub was… The clock ticking. After the awkward sucking of bacon fries by ourselves and another pint we started to have a conversation and the atmosphere lifted, it’s a... More

November this year I was part of a group of 8 ranging from 25 years old to 55... After a wet afternoon in Ambleside we decided to go into the golden rule. The pub had about 3 other people in beside our group of 8. The seats by the fire were free and we took advantage of this by sitting... More

I am sorry to hear that you did not have a pleasant visit to the Golden Rule. I don't often go to pubs, by the Golden Rule is one I'll pop into occasionally. They are dog friendly, but that hospitality comes to an end if your dog barks a couple of times. The landlord really doesn't get it, there are ways to politely ask a customer and not make his point from the other side of the... More

I am sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience during your recent visit to the Golden Rule. Whilst barking dogs are an annoyance to other customers, I completely agree with you that there is a right and a wrong way to address such an issue. And shouting across the room is most definitely wrong. Please accept my wholehearted apologies for... More

As someone who gets suspicious when seeing only really positive reviews about a place I can honestly say I that I have to eat my words in this case. This really is a terrific pub, immaculately clean and well presented and serves perfectly kept beer in very civilised surroundings. Very highly recommended.

It must be nearly 20 years since I tried the Golden Rule, and it still seems about the same pub. No smoking inside anymore, thank heavens, and a thing called the mobile phone has been invented. But otherwise, no TV, no music, no attempts to be a gastro pub. Just very good beer, at this time of year a good... More
