Nice to walk about away from the bustle if all those tourists. I used to live here and even in those days we used to complain how crowded toytown became in the summer months, didn't feel like it belonged to the locals any more. So on a quiet return it's nice to get away and enjoy the views and time... More

Unfortunately when we were there it was just before the Folk Festival and the entrances were all closed. We walked around part of the perimeter on the city wall so could see quiet a lot of the gardens, the mound and the children's play area, which looked impressive. Before taking the train from Canterbury West station on the Saturday, we... More

The main advantage of the Dane John Gardens over other gardens in Canterbury is the stunning view of the city you can have if you walk up to the top of the mound. This isn't too hard to do, although as a couple of oldies there were a few steps where we would have appreciated a handrail on the way... More

You will like this corner café in the park if you have never had South American treats. It's heavy on the clichés and Latin stereotypes, but I think this place will continue to improve its offerings. The potential is there, and the people are nice. Hope they're around in winter. We had their "empanadas" which are like mini-pastys: the dough... More

The gardens offer a pleasant shaded ares to walk and sit when one wants to escape from the crowded, tourist and shopper filled pedestrian streets of Canterbury. The ancient walls of the city define the gardens and provide additional shade and a break from the traffic noise just outside the walls. There's also a nice snack bar/ restaurant in the... More

There is a very good new cafe in the park offering Latin American street food and excellent coffee. It is housed in the old wooden cafe kiosk which previously had only limited opening hours and a very traditional range of food and beverages: straight out of the 1970s really ( tea and filter coffee; brand name ice creams; pre-packaged cakes... Not really a lot there as compared to the cathedral and other attractions in Canterbury. However, an interesting place as it contains part of the ancient city wall. Plaques placed around the Gardens give bits of history about the area. It wouldn't be the highlight of a trip to Canterbury but could provide a shady break on a summer day.

The Dane John Gardens are really lovely, and kids will enjoy playing on the old city wall and love the wooden castle maze below the high point in the wall. The only caveat? There are people living rough in the park, and they don't always exhibit behavior you might want your children to see. We were there in broad daylight... More

It's ironic that this park, which is in itself one of the most attractive spaces in Canterbury, should also most clearly demonstrate the major downsides of the city. While the medieval city walls, the neatly kept lawns, the typical park features such as a band stand and a play area for children, and the pleasant café are certainly worth checking... More
