Beautiful gardens, a must for rose lovers but wonderful for others too. Even if you are not a gardener, the place is ideal just for a peaceful walk, so close to the M25 and St Albans yet so peaceful and beautiful.

My femm's favourite visitation choice. Tucked away in this pretty corner of Hertfordshire, is the most extraordinary collection of roses, 30,000 different varieties. Run by the Royal Society, the gardens demonstrate the English passion for this ubiquitous flower. My femme calls out from the background, "Hear Hear!". There are also companion plants that happily co-exist with roses. Vast beds of... More

We visited the Gardens of the Rose on the last day of public opening in 2014 (dates were 7th June - 3rd August) and think we missed be best of the season. The first area we walked around all the rose flowers had died (i.e. just loads of dead-heads); in addition the rose arches no-longer had any roses on them.... More

Beautiful gardens, gorgeous flowers in tranquil surroundings, we really enjoyed walking around, smelling the fragrances. It was a delight. BUT do not rely on the tearoom for food, bring a picnic. I really wish we had done so. The sandwiches cost over £4 each for basic supermarket sliced bread and a a slice of processed ham, slimy and unappetising. They... More

What a gem, a most beautiful tranquil rose filled garden. Beautifully laid out, with probably every rose ever invented. The scent was gorgeous, following you around, without having to bend to smell roses. Three ornamental ponds and other plants and trees to compliment the roses. They must be considered past their best, as the garden closes for the winter next... More

Well laid out and maintained rose and flower gardens. Good parking and tasty clotted cream scones. Easy to follow, level paths so good for elderly and babes in prams. Absolutely beautiful on a sunny day. Would have liked to have more details on Rose names etc but a minor critiscm.

Many gorgeous rose climbers and bushes some looked a bit dead or withered. The majority were lovely and I do appreciate it is hard and delicately skilled work looking after a rose garden of that size. There was a wedding when I went, very grateful I was still allowed in, but felt at times different entrance would be appropriate for... More

We had a wonderful afternoon here. Such an opportunity to see a wide variety of specimens in a superb garden. A lot of hard work has gone into this. The tearoom is nice but the prices are silly; the cakes are good but limited and the sandwiches though freshly made are on basic sliced bread and the choice is poor.... More

I hadn't realised that such beautiful roses were on my doorstep. There were so many varieties that I found it difficult to choose a favourite! There is a lovely cafe there too with homemade cakes and scones. Will visit again next year.
