The Great Hall in Winchester is part of the old castle, and contains a replica of King Arthur's Round Table, a huge bronze statue of Queen Victoria and an interesting gallery of Winchester's history and development. The real gem though is Queen Eleanor's Garden, just out the back of the Great Hall, a lovely little historically-planted garden. You can see... More

We visited the castle on a trip to Winchester. The castle is famous for housing the round table and is free to visitors. Visitors can see the main hall, a gallery and a poorly stocked shop. The information about the history of the castle and the legend of the round table was not presented well. The castle does not compare... More

We loved the replica of Arthur's round table and the area telling us all about the history of the Great Hall.

They do however suggest that a donation is made when you enter, but once inside, the great hall is not as big as I imagined, but the table is indeed round. Apart from a nice gift shop there is not really anything else to see in the Great Hall itself. However there's a tiny garden to look around and a... More

Ok, it's not the actual round table of King Arthur, but it's very old and Henry the VII looks as though he has had himself painted as Arthur. Don't miss Queen Eleanor's garden .. A tiny secluded gem behind the great hall itself. The castle is a mix of Jacobean and this are roman remains too .. It gives you... More

Very atmospheric and well worth a visit. The Great Hall is justly described and is a wonderful peaceful space just to take the time to stand and reflect. Arthur's round table, the wedding gates and the stained glass are all very interesting to look at and there are plenty of boards with information to read.

For a small donation the Great Hall, the Long Gallery and the surrounding gardens and buildings give a unique view of the Capital of England, 800 years ago and up to the last century. It is worth allowing at least an hour for the inside features and then the same time to stroll around the nearby military buildings to get... More

The Great Hall was included in our Heritage package from the Winchester Hotel and Spa. The hotel failed to tell us it was free anyway! Either way, it was worth a visit if you are in to history. I love the medieval period, so enjoyed seeing the round table and looking at the stained glass. The 'Wedding Gates' are like... More
