One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250 years of campaigning for peace by The Royal Green Jackets and their former regiments, the 43rd and 52nd (The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry), the 60th (The King's Royal Rifle Corps) and the 95th Rifles (The Rifle Brigade). An outstanding collection of uniforms, weapons, silver, paintings and medals set over two floors. The exhibition on the first floor, entitled 'With the Rifles to Waterloo', opened in 2015 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the 25 square metre model of the battle with light and sound commentary. The museum is situated in Peninsula Square, formerly the barracks and the home of the Rifle Depot.

Sadly the RGJ are no longer in existence and now form part of the Rifles. The museum traces their history up until amalgamation and to current day operations. I think we've all seen the "Sharpe" series on the tv and it's interesting to see and understand a bit more about the wars he "fought" in - the exhibition on the... More

I don't usually spend much time in museums but this is an exception to the rule. Fascinating history of the Rifles regiments through the ages including a diorama of the Battle of Waterloo Close to the town centre and well worth the small entrance fee and don't forget to sign the gift aid form

Almost every war that Britain was involved in , is showcased in this museum. The displays are excellent and you will need at least two hours (maybe more ) to be able to fully appreciate. A must when visiting Winchester.

It's situated within easy walking distance of the City centre, it is also one of Winchester’s five military museums. We went there because my partner is a historian and he loves to tell me stories ;) It's quite small but shows the full image of history of The Royal Green Jackets. I wouldn't recomend it if there wasn't the one... More

The museum is very well laid out for a trip through the fantastic history of the green jackets. Lots of interactive bits for the young ones, like rifles and dressing up stuff. A very enjoyable visit.

This is a very interesting museum. The signs outside can be a little confusing on how to find it but well worth the visit. There are activities around the museum for children to get involved with too. Would definitely recommend.

As a military history enthusiast I really found this attraction very interesting. Its well laid out and logical in the way in which it takes the visitor through the main historical events that the Royal Green Jackets participated in.

The Royal Green Jackets Museum is a fascinating and absorbing museum covering the history of the regiment from the 18th century through the Napoleonic Wars to the Victorian Wars of Empire up until the present day. The collection is vast with many medals and artifacts including several Victoria Crosses, many uniforms and weapons. Particularly impressive is the Peninsula and Napoleonic... More
