An unusual experience - It was fascinating to see all the memorials especially for those that died in both wartime and peactime sinkings of ships - It certainly make one grateful to being free of war or of unsafe voyages in peacetime

This is a haven of quiet with all sorts of interesting nooks and crannies, old tombstones, and wildlife. It's a bit ramshackle in places, but that adds to the atmosphere. It's just pleasant strolling among the remnants of others' lives, reading their memorials.

Visited the next morning after having spent the previous day travelling 600 miles across Ireland/Britain. It was a perfect place to slowly walk around, lost in thoughtful solitude and peace.

Southampton old cemetery has some of the oldest graves in Southampton. It's a charming place which is kept clean by the Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery, a voluntary group who do tours of the cemetery and can tell you about it's most famous occupants. The Hawthorns Centre nearby has a list of names who have been buried there. Very helpful... More

My fiancee and I went looking for Titanic related memorials and it proved interesting and challenging! Any with a blue marker are titanic related, though the site is bigger than it looks.

I've visited the Old Cemetery a few times over the years doing ancestral research. It's a lovely peaceful place and an interesting reflection of Southampton's history containing the graves of ordinary folk and city dignitaries as well as some rather splendid memorials. Being adjacent to Southampton Common (an area of Special Scientist Interest) has given the Cemetery ecological importance and... More

My family and I always walk around the ground of this cemetery with the dog around Christmas time. It's nice place to finish a walk after being in the Common. Very picturesque!!

Many lives were lost on the Titanic, in war, and due to natural causes. What I find intriguing about this ancient cemetery is that it seems to have been the practice to bury family members in one site/grave. Was this to save land or for some other reason? Take a look at the dates, headstones and the written words, and... More

Firstly a cemetery is not part of my usual hang outs but this is no ordinary cemetery. It's steeped in history especially the WW era and has strong links to the Titanic disaster. Dogs are also allowed to wander round with you.

Partly a history lesson and partly a haven for wildlife. The cemetery is zoned which are mown or strimmed seasonally so that there are always some areas where the memorials are clearly visible. These are fascinating; walking round with a smart phone researching different people or events is irresistible. Many memorials refer to those who lost their lives at sea... More
