Lots to see

A small place but lots to read and learn about, staff were friendly enough. Like a small version of the London Natural history museum. Loved the dinosaur section!

Yes it's refurbished , still has the old Dino and local archaeology and the Butterflies will soon be flying. A peaceful place , suitable for families with children. Simple interesting displays.

I rather stumbled across the Portsmouth Natural History Museum by accident whilst out for a walk in March 2015. It is tiny but there is enough in there to keep you occupied for a good half an hour. In the summer they have a butterfly enclosure you can walkthrough, I will return to give this a go. If you're in... More

Very small museum by the waterfront in Portsmouth, has several stuffed animals as well as a butterfly house in the back, although since we were visiting off season, all it has are stick insects, but I am sure the butterflies are lovely in the summer. Nice selection of small exhibits and information making this museum a decent place to go... More

It is to the credit of Portsmouth City Council that this museum is still open throughout the year and is free of charge. It is an interesting example of an old fashioned museum with plenty of fossils, stuffed birds and stuffed animals. The museum had various education rooms so I presume it is widely used by school parties. It is... More

Came across it during a walk in the rain, and went in out of the rain and was pleasantly surprised admission is free and there is a lot to see including a stuffed dinosaur. There is a butterfly house which was closed for the season when I visited

My 5yr old grandson wanted to visit the boating lake and we parked further up the road from the museum. As we walked past I remembered that many years ago we'd taken his dad on a visit and on the spur of the moment decided to pop in. We couldn't take his scooter in but there are lockers in a... More

Rescued from extinction by volunteers, the Natural History Museum has really been spruced up. Basically it is a home for a great collection of taxidermy and ideal for the 2 to 8 brigade with friendly knowledgeable staff. We were there at the right time for the butterflies and it was lovely just to sit and watch them. Great little place... More

The butterfly room was the best part. The rest is small but with good exhibits. So, like the Natural History Museum, but a hundredth of the size and numbers of people. So good for small people to get a taste of natural history, without them getting bored or crushed. What's upstairs - could it be opened up?

Visited the museum today with my 5 year old nephew and new born baby. Was refused entry because I needed my pram for my baby who was sleeping (plus all the other stuff you have to carry around with a baby). Apparently they have a strict no pram policy, very disappointed. They offer an unsecured buggy park but by no... More
