This FREE attraction is excellent for children as soon as they can walk and pay attention The exhibits are at ground level and up and very easily explained and described. As it is free going several times gives you time to absorb one or two facts and get more another time. The attahed butterfly garden is interesting although there were... More

Visited Southsea (an old haunt) with my Mum, parked near the Canoe Lake and stayed in that area of the town. Saw the sign for butterflies alongside that of FREE and decided to visit the museum. The exhibits on the ground floor were laid out alphabetically, and wording was clear and concise. The butterfly part was lovely.A great place to visit!

Portsmouth Natural History Museum also houses an aquarium and butterfly house plus seasonal events including Reptile and Amphibian Weekends! Their beautiful butterflies fly. Portsmouth's fascinating geology and take a look in the new exhibition room for your educational fix. The displays are designed to allow visitors a view of the natural world as they could never see it in real... More

I do like to pop into Cumberland house as the weather gets warmer in june to see the butterflies. The museum itself is quite old fashioned which is either a good or bad thing depending on your tastes but there are plenty of people who enjoy it so I have no issues there. I like the refurb. But today I... More

I really wanted to like this place but struggled. Even post refit it still had broken things, things made from papier-mâché and staff that didn't seem to care. An initial warm welcome was followed by staff gossiping and not really paying much attention. On entering the butterfly house (devoid of butterflies - perhaps not butterfly season? Nothing to explain!) I... More

A small place but lots to read and learn about, staff were friendly enough. Like a small version of the London Natural history museum. Loved the dinosaur section!

Yes it's refurbished , still has the old Dino and local archaeology and the Butterflies will soon be flying. A peaceful place , suitable for families with children. Simple interesting displays.

I rather stumbled across the Portsmouth Natural History Museum by accident whilst out for a walk in March 2015. It is tiny but there is enough in there to keep you occupied for a good half an hour. In the summer they have a butterfly enclosure you can walkthrough, I will return to give this a go. If you're in... More

Very small museum by the waterfront in Portsmouth, has several stuffed animals as well as a butterfly house in the back, although since we were visiting off season, all it has are stick insects, but I am sure the butterflies are lovely in the summer. Nice selection of small exhibits and information making this museum a decent place to go... More

It is to the credit of Portsmouth City Council that this museum is still open throughout the year and is free of charge. It is an interesting example of an old fashioned museum with plenty of fossils, stuffed birds and stuffed animals. The museum had various education rooms so I presume it is widely used by school parties. It is... More
