These gardens differ from the more traditional 19th and 20th century designs, as they were mini landscapes designed almost as theatrical sets for the home owner to entertain his guests with lavish garden parties. One thing they were not were great flower gardens. At Painswick, romantic follies combine with long vistas, informal plantings, and a large kitchen garden to create a relaxing environment for todays visitor to appreciate how our forefathers lived and to understand how gardens have changed over the centuries. « less

Lots to see in terms of follies, nature walks, fruit and vegetables etc and a real pleasure to walk round ending with homemade cake and a cuppa in the cafe

We hadn't been to this garden for years so it was great to see how much it has been developed. The weather was good so helped to make the visit special. Friendly staff at the shop and cafe and enjoyed a tasty scone with my coffee.

Thank you for your comments about how the Garden has developed in recent years, our gardening team have been working very hard over the last couple of years to improve the visitor experience and I will pass on your comments. Glad the home made scone came up to scratch as well, we are now serving these with a locally made... More

We have visited many times to see the snowdrops, which are unsurpassable. Being at a loose end I visited last week to see how it looked during the summer. It certainly wes different, with little colour The predominant colour is verdant green, provided by the many fruit trees and vegetable plots. There was a little colour near the exedra, but... More

Thank you for your review and we are delighted that you visited the Garden during the summer. We are so often known (quite rightly!) for having a spectacular display of snowdrops, and visitors often don't realise that a summer visit can be just as interesting and quite different. You are so right in saying we are not a plantman's garden... More

My husband and I went to these gardens last Sunday (20th July). They were wonderful with a surprise around every corner. There are well made up paths with different views and a view point overlooking the Cotswolds. However, the cafe needs to have someone who is able to keep on top of the orders and how to run a kitchen.... More

A lovely mixture of formal gardens with some 'back-to-nature' woodland areas. Loved the various follies dotted around the grounds, particularly the Red House with its views down the valley where the formal gardens are situated. There's also a maze which was fun to try. Entry charge was £7.00 or thereabouts for an adult, not particularly cheap but worth it, I... More

Thank you for your kind review, the Rococo period was known for its mix of formal and informal. The follies were so positioned to act either as an eyecatcher, gazebo or sometimes both. Hope to see you back soon. More

Great story here, imagine finding this hidden forgotten valley and bringing it back to life over the past 30+ years. Stay for tea as well

Thank you for your review. It has been a fascinating project bringing this abandoned valley back to its 18th century glory. Still some areas to do so the journey is not over yet. More

The garden though not huge, seemed to swallow the other visitors and we felt as if we were there alone, just how we like it! A fascinating insight to how gardens have developed. The garden is beautifully kept with helpful labels of what plants are in each bed. We were there for two hours not counting lunch, we visited on... More

This is a grand example of the rococo gardens which existed for no other reason but for the owner's pleasure. It is not very large but can be carefully covered in 45 minutes to an hour.
