Type: Scenic Railroads, Landmarks
Owner description: The GWR is a steam and diesel heritage railway in the beautiful English Cotswolds. The railway warmly welcomes the new Flag & Whistle Restaurant franchisee to the Railway. We wish her all the best for the 2014 season and look forward to enjoying the new exciting menu. The Restaurant will be open 30 min before the first train until late on operating days, offering homemade cakes, light bites, afternoon tea and freshly cooked lunches using local ingredients as well as a selection of hot drinks, locally produced fruit juices and cold drinks. Since 1981, about 12 miles of line have been restored, together with platforms, buildings, steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock. There are two cafes at the railway, two shops, a self-guided heritage trail, and lots of things for children to do. In addition to scheduled heritage train services, the GWR hosts a number of galas and enthusiasts' events throughout the year including Steam and Diesel Galas, Real Ale Weekends, Classic Vehicle Days, Fish and Chip Specials. The railway also stages events for children such as Days out with Thomas, a Halloween Steam and Scream Special and Santa Specials. Visit the GWR at Toddington, Winchcombe, or Cheltenham Racecourse stations. Free Parking. Upcoming events include: Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September - Day Out With Thomas; Thursday 30th November - Hallowe'en Steam and Scream Special; 29th & 30th November, 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th,20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th December - Santa Specials ; Friday 26th and Saturday 27th December - Mince Pie Specials; Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th December - Christmas Cracker mixed traction gala.

We took our daughter (aged 4) to the Santa Special trip yesterday (December 13th 2014) and I can not recommended it enough. ALL the staff excelled themselves in festive cheer and fun. The carriages were decorated in lovely stubble decorations. On arriving the itinerary of what you were meant to do was very clear and you felt welcomed not moved... More

Took one of the first of the regular "Santa Specials" this year - by Steam train from Cheltenham to Winchcombe (North Pole) - and even though I know the area well, it's a real plus to see it from the train, as you get a new perspective on places you thought you knew. Nice present for my son and the... More

we used the train to go to the Races at Cheltenham three times now from Toddington. It is a great way to travel, and the volunteers who work on the train, providing drinks, coffee etc are lovely.

I had a driver experience day in September that my wife had bought ne for a special birthday. The whole day was wonderful, starting with a cooked breakfast, then a guided tour of the engine shed, an initial go at driving a steam loco on its own followed by the rest of the day either driving, firing or riding in... I take my grandson here often as he loves the train rides. Usually on a steam engine and diesel. Goes from Cheltenham Racecourse to Toddington. Good value and faults will love this as much as the kids.

Courteous service throughout by the volunteers on the railway, lovely scenery and comfortable carriages, excellent eating places at the various stops and a well organised beer tasting at Winchcombe station.

My wife and I enjoy steam locomotive attractions and always take the ride when available. As I was planning our most recent visit to England I discovered this steam locomotive attraction located about 13 miles from our final destination in Stow on the Wold. We arrived early for our 12:15 departure and found the station and platform as interesting as... More

We last travelled on this railway 17 years ago and this was the highlight of my husband's visit to the Cotswolds. We had a superb day made even better by the sun shining and it being warm. He spent the whole time leaning out of the carriage doorway videoing the trip! The line has been extended since our last visit... More
