Visited the mermaid inn on a warm lunchtime , late October just for drinks , after a short wait at the bar we were served by a migrant worker whose English wasn't the best , I ordered a Guinness which clearly he had little idea how to pour correctly , so waited till it settled then returned it , then... I really find this place bizarre, but I keep going back as I love the bar!! In my last review I mentioned the grumpy barman on our last visit. This time we had a new guy who was incredibly slow. While serving people in front of us he kept up a conversation with the waiter cleaning glasses, which just slowed... More

The menu wasn't exhaustive but we easily found great choices, I had the steak (can highly recommend!) and enjoyed a delicious starter and pudding too. We tried some of the beer which was very varied, and the cocktails were well made by one of the bar staff who came over to explain what had gone into it and how he... More

The old cobbled Mermaid Street seems typical of Rye Town. We had lunch in the Mermaid Hotel. Menu is superb and not as expensive as you may think. It's also good for morning coffee and afternoon teas. There are Historic buildings and small individual shops....hooray, no Starbucks or McDonald's....enough tea-rooms to satisfy anyone. The individual shops are a real treat... More

This is beautiful bar for a quick drink with huge fireplace and oozing history. Pity about the bartender who I think has been there too long. He walked around the bar at 10.20pm on the sunday telling everyone how tired he was and how he was closing up at 10.30 on the dot. I'm sorry but I used to work... More

We went to the mermaid bsr with my new in laws as it was where they had spent their honeymoon. It was a little crowded to start with but we soon found a table and all had lovely Chispsta's. The food was excellent the only thing that spoilt a great lunch was one of the waiters who appeared to be... More

Wonderful place to sit and enjoy a glass or two. Comes into its own during the winter months when the fire is lit. You just won't want to tear yourself away from it! :o)

This is well worth a visit if you are a tourist...the oldest coaching inn in the lovely town of Rye..on Mermaid Street.Best to park elsewhere as the car park is small. Its not however an easy walk for older people or pushchairs as its a cobbled street.Be aware the drinks are expensive! But if your looking for old world, history etc this... More

I haven't seen many (any?) pubs this old that are this beautiful and this well preserved. Great atmosphere, cozy if you're seeking refuge in winter, but also pleasant in the summer with outside seating in the sun. And of course the fireplace is magnificent!

We only had time for a drink but it gave us a chance to visit one of the most interesting places in the area.To try and picture what it would have been like when used for smuggling was fascinating. The structure of the building was amazing and beautifully preserved. It was just full of atmosphere I could have sat there... More
