We stayed in an independent guest house just off St James Street a short walk from Brighton town centre which meant we had the delight of walking down St James Street several times during our stay. The street is hugely diverse in terms of it's shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. If you're food lovers you will most certainly want to... More

Kemp town historically is known as Brighton’s Gay Quarter. Although Brighton being the 'gay capital' of England is welcoming to all and everyone. Kemp town does offer the gay community pubs, bars and clubs which are aimed specially at the gay community and that advocate being gay friendly more openly than other places in Brighton. This can mostly be seen... More

Maybe we went at the wrong time of the day? who knows, but noting to see see in the daytime when we took a stroll up there. maybe it comes to life in the night time. But we couldn't find any places of interest at all.

Some cool looking bars, cafes and restaurants Some parts of Kemp Town are a bit scruffy and less than salubrious. But I felt safe walking out on my own at night.

Good selection of Boutique hotels and guest houses (you'll need to book in advance though). Where to go for antiques and curios.

Evidence of a real homelessness problem. Sleeping bags and belongings on streets and benches. Number of people drinking in public, cheap cans of cider. Quite intimidating at times.

To drive through Kemptown would hardly warrant a snatched view out of the side window. But park up - if you can - and take a leisurely stroll around all the sideroads and you will find many interesting mews, small and interesting shops. Perhaps call in at Marmalade for a super lunch or snack. In our view, well worth a... More

St James street the entrance to Kemptown is nothing short of Dirty and to a degree a little seedy/tacky (great if you love that sort of thing) venture a little further though and you will be treated to amazing bars restaurants shops and buildings it really is a self contained village within a city a must see for architecture lovers... Quirky and Queer. Colourful and full of people, especially during Pride. Don't go there if you're not after unconventional fun, hipstery places and people from all nationalities, religions, sexualites, cultures and ideals!
