We enjoyed a pleasant family outing to this castle during a holiday in Dorset. The building is of National importance, and a delight to explore. The gardens were well laid out, and allowed views to the older Castle ruin nearby, and to the present building from across the lake.

This castle is positioned in a lovely setting overlooking water, I only wish it had been better weather whilst we were there so we could have enjoyed the grounds more, it looked like it would be a lovely walk. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable, a vey homely feel to this castle, we will probably return when there is an event... More

We visited the castle because of its Raleigh history. The house is smaller than other stately homes but this gives it a more homely feel. The rooms are smaller but of a good standard and the history of the two mainfMilies who have owned it was fascinating. The other plus for this are the lake and gardens, both beautifil

We are so glad that you found the history of the Castle fascinating. As you especially came to see the Raleigh History you may be interested to know that October 2018 marks the 400th commemoration of his execution. Plans are embryonic at the moment but we are in talks with other sites associated with him i.e. the Tower of London... More

The real treasures in this castle are the volunteers who share their knowledge and love of the house and artefacts with you. From the chap on the gate who takes your money and patiently talks you through where to park or take a comfort and/or food break to the lady who welcomes you as you walk through the door their... Have made two journeys to this castle and both times have been denied entry. Both times there was not adequate information on the website to warn of unusual events at the venue, curtailing access, even though we are paying members of the Historic Houses Association. Two round trips of 70 miles, a wate of time. Abysmal!

Thank you for your review. You say that you should have been informed. However, it quite clearly says on our Website that :- “….Prices do not apply to special event days listed on this site as the event admission charge will apply …” Equally, on our leaflet it states:- “…Admission prices may vary on special event days …” So far... Visited this castle with family and as soon as you walked in the front door you felt welcome. The volunteer staff were obviously keen and enthusiastic in their role. The way the castle was laid out made it really visitor friendly. The fact that this is family owned seem to come through in the lay out making the visitor feel... More

Beautiful historic house and stunning gardens, with a lake over which there is a view of the old castle ruins. (note the ruins cannot be accessed from the gardens). Oh, and the soup in the cafe was lovely too.

Very disapointing we paid a lot to go in to see the castle and the staff were snobby and unfriendly and you were only allowed to see a few downstairs rooms a complete rip off really, would not recommend. Better to just pay to look around the gardens as the castle is a waste of time as they don't actually... More

Thank you for your review. We are surprised by your comment that you can only see a few rooms downstairs. The tour takes the visitor through 20 rooms and over 3 levels in the castle. All the staterooms are on display and the tour includes Raleigh's original kitchens and the family museum in the cellars. Our tearoom food is either... More

The castle itself is fascinating. The grounds are good with great walks. The man made lake gives great views of the castle from many viewpoints.
