The castle itself is fascinating. The grounds are good with great walks. The man made lake gives great views of the castle from many viewpoints.

Sherborne Castle was built in 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh as a private residence after residing for a few years in a Castle of the same name on the estate and which now is in ruins. King James I sold it to the Digby family after executing the owner in 1617 and has been their residence since then. Very attractive... More

Thank you for your comprehensive review. Just to help other readers, the gardens you refer to next door is Castle Garden Centre. This is a brilliant garden centre where we source some of our plants in the gardens and it is definitely well worth a visit after coming to us especially if our gardens have inspired you to get gardening... Before you visit an attraction you envisaged how you think it will be. This was so much more than we expected . We only really had time to visit half the rooms in the castle. You had very helpful cards which itemised all the things in each room and what era they were from . Also interesting story cards in... More

Thank you for your lovely review. We hope you will come back soon and see the other half of the Castle. Why not come in high summer when the Herbaceous borders are in full glory or in the Autumn when the Autumn colours look magnificent reflected in the lake? Please bring the sunshine with you! More

This historic house has so much of interest and it would be possible to spend two to three hours on the house alone, with a further hour in the grounds. Because of the innovative design, the rooms are on a domestic scale and they afford views in all directions - towards the carpets of spring flowers and towards the old... More

After driving 50 miles to visit the house the day was ruined by a pretty obnoxious man on the door to the house. It wasn't just our party of 4 , the couple behind us were also treated to what was pretty close to a sarcastic ignorant manner. I chose to walk out and leave. I don't normally write poor... More

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Sherborne Castle. A lot of money must be being spent on maintaining this beautiful building and I really enjoyed the information cards that were available in each room. Only criticism would be the people who were supervising each room - you felt like your every move was being watched, which was a bit... More

8 of us went to visit the house and grounds today - 4 adults, 4 kids 10, 5, 4 and 3. The gardens were fabulous and all the children enjoyed the walk around the lake. We picked up the garden kids trail from the tea room which had some good questions. I think the younger children would have enjoyed it... More

We are so glad that you enjoyed the gardens for they are looking lovely at the moment. Thank you for your suggestions for the children's trail, it is a good idea. We didn't think to check ahead and turned up for a stroll around the castle- it's closed over the winter months till April and you can not just access the gardens. However we met a couple who said you can take a stroll around the outskirts (around 5 mile circular route) and you can take in the sites. There is... More
