I use the central library in North Hill. Built in the 1920s and rebuilt after the blitz, it's days are numbered. The council have announced plan to close the existing building and move some of the facility to Maxwell House on the corner of Mayflower St and Armada Way. There is to be a public consultation on what is to... More

It's the first time I've been into Plymouth Library with the intention of joining which I did. The part-time Librarian who was doing a socialogy degree at Uni was so helpful and the whole place though antiquated has loads of charm. I liked the idea of the Quiet Room and will be returning soon.

In my final year of study at Plymouth University, I made extensive use of Plymouth Central Library. For my creative writing dissertation, I wrote three short stories for girls aged 9 – 11. I wanted to use Jacqueline Wilson’s novels to contextualise my work, and I found an extensive range of her works available at Plymouth Central Library as well... More

I use the library often, for general reading, borrowing and research, but not all staff are equally helpful, to put it mildly. There are some much more enthusiastic than others, others to avoid at all costs. Some of the smaller libraries are much more interesting, vibrant, enjoyable to visit and have lovely enthusiastic and engaged staff - time for some... More

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write your review. My teams and I are working hard to improve the library service. Less positive feedback really helps us to identify the areas which need most attention. I shall be discussing your comments with the Central Library team because you raise important issues. More

I rarely feel enthused by Plymouth Central Library. As I do a fair amount of research I have occasionally used the History Room but was put off by a rather bossy Library Assistant who scuttled around with importance and was very talkative. I suspect that space has been her empire for many years and I felt I was back at... More

This is Plymouth's only decent biggish public library. It is used a fair bit upstairs but the lending part on the ground floor is woefully under used, despite some major rejigging a couple of years ago. That maybe because so many people have home Internet access and a lot of fiction can be downloaded for peanuts, maybe also because so... More

Thank you so much for you review which hits so many nails right on the head. We have loads of photos of the interior for Flickr and Facebook, but need to put some on TripAdvisor. More

I use the library regularly as a pace to study for my degree. I used to sit in the quiet room, but it was populated by people who don't know how to turn their phones off, people who think it is okay to play games on their phones with the volume turned up and staff wandering through seemingly thinking it... I'm really sorry that you've had problems with noise levels in the Quiet Room. Having the Meeting Room next to the Quiet Room is far from ideal, as it means that users and staff have to walk through one to reach the other. I'll spend some time working in the Quiet Room and monitor the noise levels. More

We went to the library to watch the film Skyfall and I was impressed at how good it was.Unfortunately the chairs are all on one level so there was a bit of juggling around to get a good view but it was fun. I find the staff and the facilities at the library are first class and nothing is too... More

Thanks, Sonia. I'm glad you enjoyed the free film show. You're quite right about the seating and we do try to lay it out so everyone gets the best possible view in the circumstances. More

Good library, friendly staff. Although i did have to wait a while as all the staff were dealing with other people. But once seen the chap was very swift in registering me and helping me with my request.

I go to the library regularly but I have noticed that its numbers are dropping during the day. This is a shame as its trying really hard to keep up with the times, and has allsorts of resources available, so visit it yourself and enjoy what it has to offer!

You're right about the drop in numbers, Mike, and it's something we're working hard to address. It's most noticeable downstairs in the lending area; upstairs where the computers are it's just as busy as it always was. The reasons are complex but it's really great to have your support. Thank you. More
