DO NOT GO HERE to study, work, read or accomplish anything else that requires concentration. I have never been in a library this noisy on a consistent basis. I used to brag about this library but will no longer. Employees are within feet of lengthy loud chatty conversations and do nothing about it. On many occasions I've sat next to... More

It's a gorgeous building and while some parts inside aren't as pretty as the outside would suggest, it's still beautiful, especially the staircase. The staff are immensely helpful and if you're looking to research local history, this is the place to go.

Friendly helpful staff in a central location. Often holds special events and encourages younger readers. Sign up for emails and go to film viewings once a month

I use the central library in North Hill. Built in the 1920s and rebuilt after the blitz, it's days are numbered. The council have announced plan to close the existing building and move some of the facility to Maxwell House on the corner of Mayflower St and Armada Way. There is to be a public consultation on what is to... More

It's the first time I've been into Plymouth Library with the intention of joining which I did. The part-time Librarian who was doing a socialogy degree at Uni was so helpful and the whole place though antiquated has loads of charm. I liked the idea of the Quiet Room and will be returning soon.

In my final year of study at Plymouth University, I made extensive use of Plymouth Central Library. For my creative writing dissertation, I wrote three short stories for girls aged 9 – 11. I wanted to use Jacqueline Wilson’s novels to contextualise my work, and I found an extensive range of her works available at Plymouth Central Library as well... More

I use the library often, for general reading, borrowing and research, but not all staff are equally helpful, to put it mildly. There are some much more enthusiastic than others, others to avoid at all costs. Some of the smaller libraries are much more interesting, vibrant, enjoyable to visit and have lovely enthusiastic and engaged staff - time for some... More

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write your review. My teams and I are working hard to improve the library service. Less positive feedback really helps us to identify the areas which need most attention. I shall be discussing your comments with the Central Library team because you raise important issues. More

I rarely feel enthused by Plymouth Central Library. As I do a fair amount of research I have occasionally used the History Room but was put off by a rather bossy Library Assistant who scuttled around with importance and was very talkative. I suspect that space has been her empire for many years and I felt I was back at... More

This is Plymouth's only decent biggish public library. It is used a fair bit upstairs but the lending part on the ground floor is woefully under used, despite some major rejigging a couple of years ago. That maybe because so many people have home Internet access and a lot of fiction can be downloaded for peanuts, maybe also because so... More

Thank you so much for you review which hits so many nails right on the head. We have loads of photos of the interior for Flickr and Facebook, but need to put some on TripAdvisor. More
