This is a linear site starting on the northern outskirts of the city of Derby and ending and the southern end of Matlock Bath. The birthplace of the factory system that did so much to change the world for good or ill depending on your point of view. Many of the mill buildings remain at Darley Abbey, Milford, Belper and... This is one of English UNESCO World Heritage sites, definitely the longest one. It starts up north at the Masson Mills, close to village of Cromford, where the south end of the site is located in Derby city center. When trying to visit all (or at least most) of the DVM you should look at the http://www.derwentvalleymills.org/ first, as it... More

The tour of Cromford mill is very limited. Despite the impression the website carefully allows you to form, the original mill building is still an empty shell, with no floors or ceilings, let alone any machinery. So the 1 hour, £3.50 tour is just a powerpoint lecture from a rambling retired history teacher, followed by a bit of a walk... More

During my summer holiday, I went to Masson Mill (which is part of the Derwent Valley Mills). It is totally fantastic and fabulous. There are exhibitions and also a museum talking about what is going on in the past there. Clothes were made there. I would recommend people to go to this world heritage site. More

The Derwent Valley Mills is a lovely building and the museum inside is very informative telling the history of the mill and the surrounding area. The mills are situated in Belper which is a nice little place with a few everyday shops like a real fruit & veg shop and a couple of butchers and a few gift shops, there... More

An area that shaped the country, Fascinating history in a beautiful landscape. Highly recommended with good range of activities and locations to visit. Particularly Matlock Bath and Cromford Mills/canals. Great walking and pubs. Look out for the fortnight of heritage celebrations each October. There are plans to build a large and completely unnecessary Tesco superstore near to Belper mill (the... More

We stayed in Matlock earlier this month, we visited the Mills towards the end of our holiday, it was wonderful to see threads and materials still being sold even though primarily it is now a retail centre, on the bottom floor they have a lovely museum and overall it is a credit to the people who keep it going. The... More
