I prefer this beach in winter to summer - great to take the dogs for a walk and to walk up the path tpo the top of the hill and look over at Aniwhata. Stay for dinner and dine at the RSA, the Bowling club or the surf club all are worth a visit

Our group drove from Auckland on our second day in NZ, and finding plenty of parking was no problem. I was a bit surprised how cold things would be, but that wind certainly made it feel like that. Glad we all had the right gear for all types of weather. Well, after our initial exploration of the beach we headed... More

Had a great time at the beach. If you feel like it you can walk up the lion rock, steps are installed so it's not all that hard. and when you have build up a sweat, wash it off by taking a dip in the water. Not to crowded when i was there. And the beach was clean.

On a stormy Spring day Piha Beach was an excellent destination for a day trip from Auckland. Equipped with a hire car and bolstered by coffee from Shed 5, we had no trouble negotiating our way out of Auckland to the Waitakere Visitors Centre then beyond to Piha Beach. The drizzling rain added to grand impression of Lion Rock perched... More

This was the very first beach I visited when I emigrated to NZ from England, in 1985. I remember looking down on the beach (much like in this photo) and being blown away by the raw beauty of the beach and the sentinnel like rocks, at each end of the beach. The sand is "golden-black" due to its volcanic past.... More

Don't swim at this beach unless the lifeguards are there and then be very cautious. Sometimes they drag 40 people a day out of the rips. On the other hand it is spectacular and you won't see waves like it in many places other than New Zealand.

Piha's spectacular long black sandy (North Piha & South Piha) beaches stretch between a huge rocky coastline with Lion Rock being the "king" rock mountain to climb. There's unrelenting pounding surf to enjoy on the beach, or running adjacent to the beach are the Waitakere ranges, a backdrop of beautiful Kiwi bush filled with gorgeous birdsong & many bush tracks... Always a real treat, a roungh n ready beach paradise in West Auckland!! Surounded by lush and hilly forest land which have plenty of accessable tracks, this is really a place I reccomend to a) avid surfers, b) tourists who want to see the real NZ, and c) anyone who likes bush walks, runs or mountain biking.

A lovely drive to a gorgeous beach - the views are stunning, great place to have a picnic and a dip in the sea but be careful the sea can be treacherous here so be on guard and be safe. Some great walks in the area,

If you go, you have to do two things; walk up Lion Rock, and go and see The Gap. The beach is beautiful and dramatic, but walk as far shouth down the beach as you can, past the life saving club, off the beach at the car park and continue south along the road parallel to the beach (not far)...
