I love the wildness of Loughcrew.....no crowds, tour buses, herding. You climb up the hill at your own pace, talk with the guide at the top, view the tombs and reflect on the antiquity and significance of the site. No lines, no gift shops but also no rest rooms. The views are stunning, I think you can see at least... More

We found this very hard to find. The GPS didn't have it in the date base. We stopped in town and got directions. With three of us listening to the two town people we were able to piece together the directions. We still got lost and had trouble finding the place to get the key to enter the site. Still,... More

Loughcrew Cairns are well worth a visit, The cairns date back to 3200BC a similar Time to NEWGRANGE, They Are set on some very steep hills, The views from where the Cairns are set are some of the Most Spectacular in Any Site in Ireland and the Carvings inside CAIRN T are some of the Most Beautiful in any tomb... Haven't been to the house and gardens, but visited the "highest hill in meath". Better than the Hill of tara, and dare i say it Newgrange. A woman had the key and let us into the cairn. Amazing to be able to go into and touch a stone age monument. Nice walk up and down, the hill. Well worth the... More

Attended the gardens, sunday afternoon,5pm,charged full admission, even though the non smiling woman said i would probably not see most of the site as it closed at 6pm,although she had time to make me a latte which was overpriced at 3euro at 5.45.pm.was dissapointed in the gardens not a flower in sight, adventure equipment closed of in part, and other parts under construction, all this... This was a surprise. Had a cuppa to start in the visitor centre of Lough Crew house. With key and flashlamp in hand drove and then climbed the hill to a magnificent 360 degree view of Cavan countryside on a clear day. Returned to walk the quirky gardens with surprises around every corner. Will be back in Summer to enjoy... More

We went to Loughcrew rather than Newgrange on the advice of locals, and it was the best advice we received on our trip. The site is on a hilltop, so be prepared for a 15-30 minute uphill walk. We brought sandwiches (no facilities on site other than a car park) and combined a wonderful picnic with the trek up (it... More

As others have noted, it's like having the Newgrange site to yourself. The climb up was steep and slick (we were on a wet day) but the views from the top were incredible. The art is cairn t is as good as that at Newgrange if you spend the time studying them. Really be careful on the climb though, the... More

I know the other passage tombs are great, but this is the one for me, The way to get there, the adventure of finding it, the QUEST and then the reward... It is amazing and you will probably have the whole place to yourself in the off season.. More
