On the pacific coastal side the Whangarei Heads you will find the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach. The Beach is surf patrolled through out the summer months and is a well known beach for boogie boarding and surfing. The water is crystal clear during the summer months and there a fantastic views from the sand dunes at either end of the beach. There are some great rock pool exploring to be had at low tide at either end of the beach. This has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in NZ. It will take you approx 35 minutes to drive out to this beach from Whangarei and aprox 15 mins from Parua Bay. Highly recommended!!

After spotting this beach on an online forum I made the trip down from Paihia to visit, after visiting over 20 beaches in Northland this one had among the best reviews, some beaches are too crowded, some are perfectly secluded and quiet, this beach belonged to the latter. Although it was quite out the way for us we made a... More

Just went tiki-touring out of Whangarei to find a beach and came upon this place... at the end of some pretty windy and narrow roads and about 45 minutes from Whangarei central, this little gem was worth the drive. Beautiful white sandy beach and pounding surf. A well patrolled if small swimming area made for a dip without the worry... More

Go to ocean beach see how beautiful it is, and then walk towards the hill to the right, hike up and over that hill and BAM! Your own private beach. We spent hours here and not a single person came over the hill. Magical. Absolutely loved it here.

Another spectacular beach in NZ. Really a great place, nice surf, easy access. Can get crowded, by NZ standards on holidays and weekends. Has a life guard station some great hikes start from here. Don't miss it.

Depending on the day this beach can be very mild or very wilde.Great beach for surfing and just relaxing. There are some nice rocks at one end for fishing. It is a great place to just get some fresh air and go for a walk.

The most north I have personally been to any Kiwi beach and it really is beautiful. I did not swim though I am told it is warm enough even in late Winter (and the water is not that in my home area at that time of year). It has a good walk there which provides some exercise. The beach and... More

Ocean Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. There is plenty of parking, but it is quite a walk from the carpark to the beach. There are toilets there, which is nice, and the surf lifesaving club is there in the summer with lifeguards. The scenery cannot be beat, and you can climb up the hill... More

Great for a nice walk, with wide and long beaches. At high tide is a bit challenging to get around the heads, though.

This is such a beautiful unspoilt beach... what's not to love about it. Even in the height of summer it's never crowded. You might be lucky enough to see dolphin playing... they are regular visitors.
