The grounds are well maintained but not very extensive. Located in the centre of the town of Maintenon. There is no long driveway. Photographs not permitted indoors. The chateau is divided into two so one tours one area first followed by a very short walk to the second section. On our visit it was extremely quite and we had the... More

The château, with origins from the year 1200, was purchased by a governess of Louis XIV's children in 1674 with the money that she earned. Later she became his secret wife and Louis took over expanding it. His big brainstorm was to build a Roman style aqueduct to divert the Eure river and take more water to the fountains of... More

just postcardlike from every angle. it's my understanding this is the home of louis 14 after he quietly married madam maintenon, a very pious and quiet woman. this place is understated by 14's standards but so gorgeous! stunning gardens, the tulips in may were the perfect color of purple happiness! the aqueduct in the background is part of 14's project... Worth the stop on El Camino. Place to put the bike safely while visiting the chateau or walk in the garden. Very beautifully decorated rooms in the Chateau, amazing library etc.. Also the aquaduct is impressive.

I've been to many chateaux, including Versailles and several in the Loire valley. This is my favorite! And it's so easy to get to from Paris. Just grab a train out of Montparnasse heading to Le Mans. You will need a PIN with a chip card to buy from the kiosk or just go to the ticket office. And it's... More

The chateau is situated right in the centre of the village and is beautiful. It is the home of the mistress/secret wife of Louis. It is ornate and well furnished. Lots of paintings and ceramics. The library is fabulous. The gardens were redesigned two years ago to resemble the original design, the roses smelled divine. There is a park to... More

Charming chateau with plenty of history, nice garden, views of the aqueduct commissioned by Louis XIV to supply Versailles but which never quite made it.

We've been to several chateaux, often large with only parts of them open to the public. Here you are in a more intimate environment where you feel like you can really put yourself into the spirit of living there. We did a group tour which was just excellent (but only in French). The guide told me that the audioguide is... More

We were returning from a holiday in the Loire Valley and had already visited many Chateaux. However we had heard about the Chateau in Maintenon and decided to make a short detour to visit it. It is right in the centre of the town ( near to Chartres) and very easy to find. The Chateau is truly beautiful with lavishly... More

How romantic is a story about a Chateau that was given by Louis XIV to his "secret" second wife, Madame de Maintenon?? Well, it's pretty darn romantic! And—this is a chateau that lends itself to a wonderful day trip just about an hour from Paris. Maintenon is accessible by train—about an hour from Paris, to be exact. We have a... More
