Elsewhere, I have pointed out that it is very easy to get "churched-out" in Venice, as there are so many to go and see. The vast majority are excellent examples of church architecture, and many are stuffed to the rafters with important works of art. The churches on Torcello are the oldest in the Venice lagoon - and the murals... More

We went to the tour on our own and a friend of ours recommended to start with Torcello. When we arrived there there werent too many tourist (everyone seems to start with Murano) and we could enjoy the basilica with just 5 other people. There is an entrance fee of 6 euros, but the mosaics inside are absolutely worth it.... More

Not sure if this is the same cathedral , but it is a 1 room view for 5$ entry fee. Highly suggest to spend time in Burano and Murano and avoid 15 min one way ferry and 15 min walk to this church and save 1 hour here. Assuming, you have seen previous cathedrals, churches ( Paris, Vatican etc) this... More

This was an un-planned visit as my wife was having some 'pampering time' so visited alone. The information was informative and it is a wonderful experience. Gives a reverence and peace allowing peaceful reflection and thought.

Some reviewers have confused this with the cathedral next door, and the tripadvisor map refers to a different church on the main Venice island. This evocative building, in Byzantine style, was built in the 11th and 12th Centuries to replace an even earlier building. I think it is architecturally harmonious but it seems to be ignored by most tourists who... More

I first visited this place over 40 years ago, and have returned several times since. I never try to miss out on coming to Torcello if I have the time when in Venice. This is the main reason for visiting the island for most people. It was the major church of the Venice lagoon area for centuries until the virtual... More

Take a book to read on your journey, and then prepare to be awestruck by the mosaic Last Judgement and the beautiful Madonnas in the apse.

A beautiful basilica which takes you right back to the early days of the Venetians. Definitely worth tagging this onto a visit to Murano and Burano.

The Basilica Santa Maria Assunta is of historical importance. When you enter (admission of 5 Euro) the cathedral you are immediately struck by its solemnity and size. Founded in the seventh century, today's cathedral mostly dates to an eleventh-century reconstruction. On the walls and apse are some magnificent mosaics which would make the trip worthwhile on their own: a lovely... More
