Travelling over a network of some 60 kilometers of narrow-gauge track, you can still find wood-burning steam locomotives running alongside several diesels and railcars. The CFF Viseu de Sus ("CFF" stands for "Caile Ferate Forestiere" - forestry railway in Romanian language) is probably the last real forestry railway still operating with steam locos in Europe. For the enjoyment of our numerous visitors, we are keeping the tradition of steam railways alive in Viseu de Sus, offering regular steam trains, charter trains with catering services and trains for special events. « less

Firstly a word of warning. It takes a LONG time to drive around Maramures, and three hours from Baia Mare to Viseu de Seus, where the train station and CFF company is based. I would thoroughly recommend staying in the village beforehand (see our review for La Cassa). You can either turn up for the train on the day to... More

I went with my wife to Maramures county in july 2013. We've staied three days in Viseu de Sus and we decied to have a trip on Vaser Valley with an old steam train. It was an amaising experience, you don't want to miss it. The light sun through the steam of the engine, the Vaser river with its valley,... More

Very interesting trip. Pity there was so little information about the locomotives and the rolling stock and no exhibition about the railway. They could learn from the UK's preserved railways.

The trip with the old steam train is fantastic. Fantastic views and landscapes can be admired over the trip. Also the old steam locomotive can be admired. The hole trip takes a few hours. Tip: Take tickets in the covered train cars if you travel in the spring beacause it might rain! Anyway there are several stops during the trip,... More

The station was a little hard to find. The train leaves right on time and it keeps on schedule. There are few stops along the way for bathrooms and food. The scenery was breathtaking.

The Mocanita railway is probably the best railway experience you can have in Romania. It is recommended to book in advance especially on special days like around Easter. It starts at 10:00 am. The arrival is after 15 kilometers where you stop for 1 hour 30 minutes to have lunch before coming back. The landscape is amazing, the train entering... More

Together with my wife and another couple we spent an amazing night between the years, with the Mocanita train. It was the best New Year’s Eve ever. Starting with the hospitality of the organizers, the vintage train and last, but not least, the party location situated in the middle of the forest, in a magical setting, away from the crowded... This is a steam railway in Maramures - the last operating Carpathian Forest Railway. It's narrow gauge, uses diesels for the non-passenger forestry operations, but uses wood-burning steam for the passenger runs. It's a wonderful experience riding up the valley through beautiful forest to a station in the deep woods. Lunch is served there, and there is time for a... More

Steam railway that uses a variety of stock from other areas (we were surprised to find carriages from the Wenger Alp Bahn), and travels through very attractive mountain and river scenery. Well worth doing

There are so many interesting aspects to the train ride up the Vaser Valley along the Ukrainian border--history of the area, train technology, natural beauty, fellow riders ( many are train buffs). It really was a highlight of touring Maramures.
