Description:

Sometimes known as the Vaser Valley Railway, the forestry railway of Viseu...

Sometimes known as the Vaser Valley Railway, the forestry railway of Viseu de Sus is a unique example of technical cultural heritage. Travelling over a network of some 60 kilometers of narrow-gauge track, you can still find wood-burning steam locomotives running alongside several diesels and railcars. The CFF Viseu de Sus ("CFF" stands for "Caile Ferate Forestiere" - forestry railway in Romanian language) is probably the last real forestry railway still operating with steam locos in Europe. For the enjoyment of our numerous visitors, we are keeping the tradition of steam railways alive in Viseu de Sus, offering regular steam trains, charter trains with catering services and trains for special events.

If you want to see breathtaking views and go with this train through the forest and mountains, the experience is definitely worth the money. The train stops twice during the trip to fuel with wood and water, so the experience is very authentic. However, during the trip and especially at the end, you realize you are having such a good... The trip is wonderful, as long as you can enjoy the scenery - the Mocanita train ride is not that comfortable. At the end of the line we had a 2 hours time to "waste" before heading back to Viseu, so we chose to travel further up, to the heart of the mountain: it was a good choice: we met... More

I like the idea but the ride is not so interesting... sorry for saying that. The rail track makes the ride at least ... uncomfortable. I had back pain after this day. The landscape is far away from what has this country to show. It is disturbing to see all the way, how the forest is cut without any remorse.... More

Dear Nemeti A, We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your day out on the Mocanita, but we would like to remind you – and all our visitors – that this is a small, preserved railway with some very old equipment. The railway was built in 1932 for the transport of timber, which is still its priority.... More

The journey with Mocanita is very nice. It lasts for 5h and during this time you can enjoy the views from Maramures, hills, animals and natural life. There is a short break and after that a longer one for those who want to eat something. The price depends on the season (46-51lei, only the ticket and 40-45 lei the food,... More

there are so many interesting thinks to do and places to see, instead of being "prisoner" of this boring and time wasting trip for 5-6 hours( depending on the season). I'l not recommend even for family with children( unless the driver of the family is very tired and ask for a brake of several hours. On my opinion, חבל על... More

Dear docdana, We are sorry to hear that you felt you wasted your time visiting the Mocanita! Of course – as with any train ride – the doors are closed during travel for safety reasons. However the trains stops, both at the 15km refreshment stop, and at Paltin for lunch, so visitors have plenty of time to stretch their legs... More

This is a small wood burning steam train that takes about one hour and half to reach the top station. Passes through forests, follows a river and twists and turns its way slowly up the valley. We bought a ticket that included a lunch at the top. There is a small museum here that tells the story of the railway... More

A nice and interesting visit for lovers of old trains and nature. You have the possibility to experience a ride on s train with a stream engine and see the beautiful Vaser valley. The workers on the train and asking the line are friendly and will make your experience even more enjoyable.

Our visit in Maramures was pure magic. Lovely landscapes, very nice houses and traditional gates, nice peoples. Our trip with Mocanita was a part of our magic story. A breathless landscape and atmosphere, a trip in past times, a joy for our souls.

This is a really lovely day out. The wood-fired steam engine is beautiful in itself, you pass through very pretty countryside and we had to stop for a herd of sheep to get off the track and cross the river. It was quite extraordinary to watch how skilfully the shepherds and their dogs controlled so many animals. The train goes... More
