Description: Sometimes known as the Vaser Valley Railway, the forestry railway of Viseu...
Sometimes known as the Vaser Valley Railway, the forestry railway of Viseu de Sus is a unique example of technical cultural heritage. Travelling over a network of some 60 kilometers of narrow-gauge track, you can still find wood-burning steam locomotives running alongside several diesels and railcars. The CFF Viseu de Sus ("CFF" stands for "Caile Ferate Forestiere" - forestry railway in Romanian language) is probably the last real forestry railway still operating with steam locos in Europe. For the enjoyment of our numerous visitors, we are keeping the tradition of steam railways alive in Viseu de Sus, offering regular steam trains, charter trains with catering services and trains for special events.

We had a mini holiday in Viseu de Sus, but the train Mocanita didn't worked that days. So we walked on Vaser Valley for 5 km. It was nice, but we could hear the chainsaws all that time and there was garbage on the road. I do not recommend it by walking.

Vaser valley is wonderful. You can visit it by one of the last stem-pulled locomotive tracted narrow-gauge railroad trains in Europe, the single one in Romania. You will feel in the XIX century, going with 17 km/h, and listening the sound of that steam-locomotive. At Paltin station and on the train you may eat and drink traditional Maramures's recipe food... This train ride was the highlight of our trip to Romania. We traveled all the way from Bucharest to get to it. The train is one of the last steam-run trains left in Europe. The ride starts at 9:00 a.m. and returns at 2:00 p.m., after winding through forested mountains, almost always next to a river. There is a break... More

A lovely touristic day out on this spectacular line into the forest. And it's slow enough to see the neighbours smiling and waving as you slide past the fields.. Good value all-inclusive ticket for the BBQ at the lunch stop.. They take dogs too so ours enjoyed making lots of friends in the carriage

The train is crowded , you need to come very early to catch a sit and after, all you do it to sit for 2 hours each direction . Take care to bring food and water! The catering is expensive and poor !

I liked the leaflet with all the personnel dressed up, nice description, scenery, food and lodging. In reality nobody is dressed with any local costumes, the lunch stop is not so great from the ambiance and facilities point of view. The lodging in the sleeping train looks good, but when you don't have air conditioner could be challenging. Also the... More

We really enjoyed the ride , the scenery , the history (in the small museum at the top) perhaps most of all the interaction with out fellow passengers. At the top of the ride (it is not the end of the line of the railroad) there is a barbeque done. We did not realize that the train would move and... More

We had big expectations for the trip, but it happened to have bad weather (continuous hard rain), the windows of the train were misted, at the final station Paltin was not enough shelter from the rain, the food and the drinks were really over-priced for their quality. Still, there are pretty great landscapes and the clean air of the forest,... More
