On July 20, 2015 my wife and I visited Pinel Island, located off of Cul de Sa on the French side. Due to not haveing any measurable rain on the island, especially the French side, the pond nearby and the shore are dried up and the seaweed smells SOOOO bad, worst sulfur smell we've ever experienced, nearly made us both... You can get a ferry out and back for $10 per person from Cul de Sak (on the coast) which takes about ten minutes. The island is small, has parasols and loungers ($20 for two beds and one parasol, same as rest of St Marten), and has warm clear water to snorkel and so e fish around the shallows. Wild... More

This is a beautiful place but the last few years prices have gone up and up and up. The ferry tripled in price; beach chairs are more expensive then anywhere else and both restaurants are getting more expensive every season. Will go if we have visitors but not to often.

The departure dock is full of rotting seaweed and stinks. The boat ride over is now $12.00 US for a 5 minute ride. The 2 remaining restaurants on Pinel are very French, complete with attitude, pricy food and a pair of beach chair at $20.00. For 2 you are at $44.00 US just to sit yourself on Pinel. The snorkeling... More

You can catch a water ferry for the price of $10 or $12 roundtrip (I can't remember) at the city of Cul de sac (spelling?) and take a quick boat ride over to this island. (this island can be seen from Orient Beach) The boat runs every 30 minutes. The island has two restaurants to eat at and purchase drinks... More

First you can not get to Pinel Island except by water taxi. Expect a cost of $12 Euros each for a roundtrip ticket. The sulfur smell at the docks is the rotting seaweed. Once on the island there are two restaurants and a small beach. They will bring your dinks into the water on a free standing table. The food... More

We visited Pinel Island twice on our last visit and had a great day each time. We always rented some chairs and umbrella from the bar. The bar service was great as well as the food. If you go request your food be delivered to a table in the water. Great fun and a great day.

Anchor a boat here for a nice relaxed and protected anchorage. But going on land we found the area divided between the nice gated neighborhoods and the more prevalent dumpy general area. There was a good pizza place in the funky neighborhood though.

I recommend a day on Pinel Island toward the end of your week's stay on SXM, once you have a base tan established. A short 5 minute boat shuttle takes you to this little island off the NE edge of the French side of St. Martin. Here you rent beach chairs/umbrella and explore the little island, or do some great...
