Having been in the Lake Chapala are for about a month now I can say, without reservation that it is warmer and dryer than the Twin Cities of Minnesota. There is much here to recommend it as a good winter get-a-way. If you are looking for a place in a foreign country that you can go to where speaking only... More

I went on a Sunday of what was a holiday weekend in Mexico, so there should have been more people. There was some bustle, but nothing much to see or do as far as I could tell. The walkway around the lake is pretty nice and new. I think there are boat rides but the boats I saw seemed old... More

We had planned on spending the day here, but it was pretty dead in the middle of the weak. It was ok but other than being located on the lake, there. Didn't seem to be much happening here during the week.

Lake Chapapa, and the towns of Chapala and Ajijic make a great day trip from Guadalajara. Take a taxi to the Vieja Central bus station in Guadalajara - and buy a ticket (about 50 pesos, as I recall) for Chapala Directo. You'll be in the Chapala bus station in about 1 hour. Walk down to the pier, take a little... More

Lake Chapala is beautiful. The people were wonderful and our hotel was more than we could have hoped for. Guadalajara was amazing the art and architecture were world class. I don't recommend driving you will miss too much. We used the buses and taxis which are inexpensive and a fun way to interact with the locals.

Lago Chapala is NOT for skiing, swimming, or any other usual water sport as we know it in the U.S. It is the depository of run off and not good for fishing either. It is a lake with pretty vistas and cooling breezes in the summer and that's all. Don 't visit expecting anything else but good views while having... More

Hidden gem! This family-owned business on lovely, landscaped grounds on the shore of Lake Chapala has everything needed for fun on Lake Chapala. Rent kayaks, sailboats, bicycles, hang gliders, or ultralight. Or go horseback riding, get a guided hike, or boat tour to nearby areas (with yummy lunch). Sandra and Jerry speak English very well. After your activity, hangout in... More

I am a homebody myself and don't look for nightlife, but I've found Lake Chapala ex-pats on the whole to be too old school and a bit aloof. Perhaps this area attracts the more eccentric of the US and Canadian population that would retire abroad, but it has been rather odd to have such such an utter lack of engagement... More
