When you reach the top of this amazing castle you cannot help but think the obvious, 'how did they manage to build this?' Driving along the road to the entrance is an experience for your nerves to begin with. Quite and experience for your car too! At the top car park you pay your small entrance fee and start the... This castle is well worth the visit as it is amazing. I'm REALLY terrified of heights and had to brace myself for the visit. If you're like me then DON'T drive there yourself. Get someone else to take you ( that way you can close your eyes for the dodgy bits of road!). There is a bit of a climb... More

This is one of the "five sons of Carcassonne" in the Languedoc region and, in my opinion, is the best. Built on a rocky ridge, it's almost two castles in one - climb the 'St Louis' stairs for a phenomenal view of the lower buildings, and Queribus in the distance. A word of warning - the medieval festival in July... More

Hard to fathom how this was built hundreds of years ago. If you had to choose between visiting this and Carcassone, take this in a heartbeat. Just so amazing. The walk up is no big deal, but if you are afraid of heights it might be a bit scary for you. We didn't walk over to the second castle as... More

The site of this castle is absolutely perfect with sheer drops on every side. The walls are well preserved and there are numerous vantage points from where one can easily imagine being a defender against the murderous Catholic armies of Simon de Montfort. More

- for both the climb and the views. Nothing made-up or gimmicks - just a raw lump of castle stuck on an amazing ridge. More

The trip to the Chateau de Peyrepertuse takes a bit of effort but will reward you after doing so. The mountain roads twist through the rocky cliffs and once to the parking area one must hike up a steep path until you finally crest the top and get your first glimpse of the Chateau. The ruins are perched high on... More

Make sure you have a good driver behind the wheel up to Peyrepertuse! The road is a narrow switchback with no guardrails. Once you pay your admission to the site, you still have a good little climb ahead of you, again with few protective barriers. We enjoyed the audio guide (2nd one free when you buy one) and learned a... More
