Because of the limited opening hours this was our first visit to this little gem of a museum. Not only are there exhibits spanning from Roman artefacts to one of Vivien Leigh’s dresses but at its core there is a very informative history of Topsham as a sea port, trading centre and shipbuilding town. The house including the large sail... More

The museum has such a lot to offer. Searches and puzzles for little ones, loads of interesting exhibits, information and staff. Could have spent hours there and will definitely go back. The staff are really friendly and I even found a lovely holiday gift.

Nice little town. Museum was okay. Topsham is lovely with some good and some not so good places to eat and drink. My wife wants to move here one day

We came across this museum almost by accident, and found a most delightful small museum managed and run by volunteer staff. The museum is housed in an historic house, just to the South of the main quay in Topsham (which is where most visitors are likely to stop their tour of the town). The main part of the museum is... Very interesting place with friendly helpful staff. Who would have thought that a little place like Topsham would have had such a fine history. Do be aware of opening times though as quite a few people were trying to go there in the morning when we were in Topsham. (open WTSS 2:00-4:30) Nice cafe at end of visit and nice... More

Was very impressesed, clean, tidy and well presented, if you are happy to stand and read allow plenty of time as there is a wealth of information. Guides are lovely and well informed. And make sure you allow time for a culpa and amazing home... More

Topsham in Devon England, was a port only second to London England in it's hay day. It facilitated a huge trade in woollen cloths to Europe, and by local accounts, built about 120 sailing ships for her majesty's Royal Navy, in six shipyards previously located at the town. Topsham museum draws all these past elements together in a period house,... More

The charming Topsham Museum was once a private house owned by Dorothy Holman, sister-in-law of the actress Vivien Leigh, and is home to the silk night dress Leigh wore in her Academy Award winning role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind; seeing it was the highlight of my visit. It is one of many items given to the... More

Topsham Museum is set in a lovely secluded garden. The estuary is just across the road and the Museum has another garden by the water, visitors are invited to sit and enjoy the view. The Museum was a Merchants House and the history of the original family and then on down the years is written up on display boards. The... More
