Start a visit with the video which is very engaging (in English or French). We took a guided tour through the archeology site that the museum sits on. My seven year old son was completely engaged. more

I'm usually bored with museums, but this was definitely cool (July 2009). Cool stuff, parts of the place are underground with an old historic cemetery. There is a discount for AAA members also. more

Definitely the best part is the remains of Old Montreal. If you are not interested in archeology, this is probably not the museum for you. But to see the old structures and read all about the early days of Montreal was great! The viewing area is free and there are some great views of Montreal from up there. If you... more

This was a fascinating place to visit. It exceeded my expectations, it even has a little viewing area up top to get good a look over Old Montreal. I had been to Old Montreal before but this was my first time at this museum. I was really interested in seeing how Montreal had developed over its long history. Not just... more

Tucked down on the waterfront in Old Montreal, this museum is less visited than it should be. Of all the Montreal museums, it has the most imaginative building design, incorporating an actual ongoing archaeological dig, chunks of the old city wall (demolished in 1800) and the first great sewer of the city. It is also a frequent venue for travelling... more

Perhaps I'm out of synch with other visitors to this site, but I (and my partner) found this museum over-rated and boring. The emphasis is most definitely on the archaeology, as opposed to the history, the ground level upwards consists of run-of-the-mill exhibition boards and domestic artefacts in glass cases. Fans of structural archaeology will probably love this place, but... more

This is such a unique place. A museum with the normal displays and artifacts but built on top of the 300+ year history of the city. You start at the bottom with a cemetery from the 1600s and work your way up to the first stone building, house, etc with excavations to the current day. It is built on top... more

The reason this museum is so good boils down to one thing: it sits on top of actual archaeology sites/digs/foundations that you can wander through and read interpertations. For any of you who are like me (I've seen so many broken pottery display cases, my eyes glaze over the instant I see them), this museum is a revelation that there... more
