So many good places to eat and enjoy. Even though much of the area was under construction it was a wonderful place to explore. Our guide took us inside public buildings that I never would have dared to enter on my own. The old banks and hotel lobbies were beautiful and then to be able to hear the history related... More

I go there more in the summer than during the cold weather. Is a beautiful place to be, reminds me of France when am there. There are activities going on every summer, is nice to take a long walk at night with a partner, is romantic!

Our group of three attended a recent walking tour of Old Montreal. It was the Xmas lights and historical tour starting at 6 PM for 90 minutes. The guide was informative with great historical events and sites. Her name was Carole and she even sang French Xmas songs as we walked through the Old Montreal streets. I highly recommend this... We had great luck in our tour guide, Louis, who lead our 11 AM Saturday walking tour of Old Montreal. Louis is a native, born and raised in Montreal, and you can tell he loves his city. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, providing historic facts and interesting stories along the way. His tour of upstairs and downstairs in the Notre... More

Free walking tour - you pay what you want as a tip at the end - takes 2 1/2 hours - does most of old port and some good stories that aren't in the guide books - best bits are that the guides takes you into buildings etc that you wouldn't normally go in which were really good . Good... More

It's a very nice area and so much to see. Well worth your time to stroll around in this area. Quite a few things to see and shops/restaurants to visit. Quite scenic and you won't be disappointed.

We were a group of 4 women with Georges, our guide. He was informed and engaging and stimulated an interest in Canadian history for all of us. It was a suitable blend of narrative, humour and information. Highly recommended.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighborhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic center of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its center, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theater.
