Your journey begins at the Algoma Central Railway depot in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where you will board our regular passenger service for a day-long rail adventure that combines the rugged mixed forests of the Canadian Shield, experienced on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, with the boreal forests of the Great Clay Belt region. In marked contrast to the mountainous Shield country, the Clay Belt region, home to the lordly moose, is a combination of level coniferous forests and great inland lakes teeming with northern pike and walleye. « less

Before booking a ride on the Algoma Central, please realize that it is a working freight railway with scheduled passenger service to remote communities and some tourist operations. The prime tourist run is a four-hour trip to the beautiful Agawa Canyon and a four-hour trip back. It is a full day and you will spend most of it in a... more

Bring a book, knitting, headphones and your own sandwich or snack. The food on the train was overpriced. We opted for the box lunch for a picnic and the roll, although fresh, lacked filling. I had the tuna and felt that the roll had been "spread" with the tuna salad. The lunch box contained, some celery/carrot sticks, a hard boiled... more

too long trip. Beautiful trip but expensive if you're coming from far. After so many hours in the train you can enjoy just a little bit over an hour at the canyon. Too short and in a rush. It's beautiful but the trip in general it's not worth it. more

Like many other travelors we were lured into the Agawa canyon train ride due to the nice brochure and beautiful pictures. Save your money and look at the brochure. As many others stated it was a long long trip. The scenery was obsured by the trees growing up to the train. I did see the employees clean the inside of... more

I live in sault ste marie, and have been on this train twice. Once when I was in grade school and once for a Fathers Day Family Trip. They had great deals for 10 of us, or so they said. It still cost us a fortune. Then as we got to the station for 7am like they asked us to,... more

Four hours to the canyon and four hours back with only about an hour in the canyon. Not enough time to enjoy the canyon. Unless you like train rides this trip is not worth the price. more

In early May 2009 I rode the Algoma Centrail Railway from Sault Ste. Marie up to Hearst. This is the thrice weekly scheduled service, not the scenic excursions that run in winter or summer. The train took about 10 hours and left from the freight yards, a couple of miles away from the downtown station. My buddy and I were... more

We took this train ride as part of our trip to the UP of Michigan last July. Many of the comments I have read here are entirely accurate. Specifically: During the summer, most of the view during this very long trip consists of bushes and leaves so close to your window that there is no “view”. The occasional clearing and... more

The Algoma Central Railway offers a day excursion that runs 114 miles north to Agawa Canyon. This trip usually runs nonstop. Other Algoma passenger trains head farther north to Hurst, ON, and stop frequently to allow hikers, campers, backpackers, resort visitors and others reach their destination. We had the opportunity to ride this train during the fall color run in... more

The topography is just beautiful and worth seeing. The train and its train tracks are over used, dirty, smelly, over priced for what you get. We were told by our hotel that they are suppose to be getting newer cars. When the do it will not be to soon. The cars sway back and forth so much that it is... more
