The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place. WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. « less

Be sure to grab a beavertail before you walk though all of the booths and shops in the market. Bring cash as very few places accept plastic.

This picturesque area is great to visit for so many reasons! The architecture is interesting, the people watching opportunities are endless as it is very popular, and has great shopping and dining options.

this looks like it needs to be rethought. read an article about the decreased attendance over the years, many farmers markets opening up around the city, increased interest in them, poor parking downtown. historical, however, all the metal and chain fencing takes away from what they are offering.

The byward market is the heart and soul of the city. Great shops and restaurants combined with the cities oldest architecture makes this area a must see.

Try the beaver tails. Nice market, fresh fruits and vegetables. The bake goods are awesome! Best place to pick up Maple Syrup.

Great people watching. Many food places all around. Food in the Market itself is pretty pricey. Found much better bargains outside.

We have so much in Canada! We loved this Market in Sept '14. No need to travel to Boston for Faneuil Hall or LA for the Farmers Market or any other.

As much a feast for your eyes as it is for the belly. The variety of booths selling everything from edible treats to jewelry to arts and crafts and clothing, you will find something you want. The BeaverTails are a must.

Good to visit anytime during your visit to Ottawa. Lots of great shopping, things to see and places to visit for eats and treats. All the shop owners were friendly and welcoming. Clothes, food, kitchen and housewares in many different price ranges. Some arts and crafts stores as well.
